If it ends up being better for you, then let's do it. I would recommend Live + a sample pad over a hardware solution. Some pads even come bundled with a copy of Live. Let me see if I can find some.
Edit: Novation Launchpad would be very good for this sort of application.

I don't think passion is something you can simply foster out of force, especially if you are depressed. I'm not saying you can't learn to enjoy a certain activity, but passion almost requires a certain level of unbridled pleasure and naiveté that can be difficult to discover when you're in the depths of depression. I wouldn't focus on being passionate because you're most likely only going to let yourself down and become even more depressed. I would focus on getting better in every possible way you can, and that just might include learning a new hobby. Even if you only use it as a distraction at first, I still think there's merit in that.
I'm a "full-time" musician who used to be incredibly passionate about music. After life-altering circumstances sent me into the depths of hell, I found that the feeling of "passion" had diminished greatly. At first I tried to force the feeling but after a while realized that there was no way to force something that occurs naturally. So I instead made music my distraction, a coping mechanism, to deal with pain. There are times now when that small spark of what some might call "passion", will seep through the cracks in the middle of a composition.
For some reason modern society expects us to be "passionate" about things. It is heralded as a virtue. But at the same time society offers no real solution to those who don't have passion ingrained in every fiber. Those who are passionate are seen as the pastors of the post-modern flock, offering us glimpses of hope for what can be, selling self-help pamphlets for our apathy. For the time being, I say forget about being passionate, and instead focus on surviving and becoming "well". Once YOU get better, you will get better at what you do.
Heavy-handed discussion aside I do recommend music and with the plethora of YouTube videos available, it's really not that expensive. You can get a decent acoustic guitar for $150 or so and if you'd rather go the electronic route, you can get a Launchpad with Ableton light for about the same price.
I use to do this as a hobby a few years ago during high school and ever since then just lost touch with it. Back then I used FL Studios which I loved but just recently I decided to revisit my love for music with Ableton live. Give that a try and perhaps get your hands on a drum kit if you have some money. Check this one out, you also get Ableton Live launchpad edition to get you started.
Completely new to this, but have always been interested. I am looking to make beats and such. For christmas I plan on asking for the Novation Launchpad as it comes with Ableton Live. Is this a good starting product? Or is there something better?
