There is a transformational d-pad mod. It's usually $7 or $8. Here. It requires a little bit of work, reviews say it's worthwhile. Although, for a total price of $35, you might want to wait for the X1 controller to go on sale for $39.99.

yeah, here it is. It's a transforming Dpad, so you'll have to screw around with your controller a bit to make it work, but it'll work great once you get it going.
