I've been waiting all of my life for this moment. I thought noone would ever ask!

For years I searched for the best slipper. I've had good ones and bad ones over the years and learned what works and what doesn't. There is a perfect slipper, in my opinion. But before I tell you what it is, let's go over the criteria of what makes a good slipper.

  1. Moccasin format: this is debatable and up to the wearer's preference. I like the moccasin over say the Scuff style because it offers you just a little bit of adjustment should you need to tighten the laces. If the Scuff is too big, it's going to be annoying and try to slip off. And a correctly sized moc still slips on just as easily as the Scuff.

  2. Natural leather: the slipper upper must be made of a natural material for durability and so your foot can breathe. Leather won't tear easily and they also help to conform to the wearer's foot.

  3. MUST have a natural sheepskin lining: this is the most important item here if you are looking for a warm, winter slipper. An unlined slipper is fine for warmer weather (although I will wear sheepskin year round) but synthetic fiber linings are a no-no for cold feet. Here's why: they don't she'd moisture properly and they get matted and rough (think brillo pad). What this means is your feet sweat and stink horribly, and the lining becomes uncomfortable after a while. And let me tell you, once a pair of slippers stink, they will NEVER smell good again. They are as good as trash. Protip:you can make certain that you have natural sheepskin be plucking a hair and burning it. If it burns and stinks like burnt human hair, you're good. If it looks like it melts into a little ball, synthetic is what you have.

  4. Rubber sole must come up over the sides: this is important if the skippers will be used outside however brief the excursions might be. This gives you great protection from water. I've had slippers where there were little rubber skid pads on the bottom, and they got destroyed by water seeping up through the leather on the bottom.

The slipper that satisfies these criteria is the Old Friend Moccasin. It is extremely well built, the interior is plush, and it is comfortable as hell. Here is the link, but please make sure you read my slipper wearing tips below! I'm a Chestnut man myself, but the dark brown is positively regal in its own right.

    Slipper wearing tips:

  5. Have a clean/sockless pair of slippers and a dirty/socked pair of slippers: I have two sets of slippers. The old friend I wear only after a shower and without socks, and a cheaper unlined scuff variety that I wear with dirty socked feet. This is absolutely key for keeping your good slippers smelling nice. With clean dry feet, the sheepskin lined types should never get stinky unless you have a preexisting fungal issue. Also, skipping the socks with lined slippers will keep the sheepskin fluffy, soft and plush longer. But you still want to put a pair of slippers on after work, no? That's why you have the second pair. Keep the dirty sweaty socked feet in one set, and the clean dry ones in the other.

  6. NEVER EVER cross contaminate your slippers! Going from the dirty pair to the clean pair or putting the clean pair on immediately after a long day in shoes will surely stink up your expensive, nice slippers in no time. And again, once they stink you might as well throw them out. This applies to shoes as well. Pick one pair of shoes and wear them for the day, if you need to change just do a quick foot wash. I could go on and on about proper foot cleaning, but that's for another post. I'll say this, you've never had clean feet until you've used an EasyFeet. Yes it's an ASOTV product, but it's a miracle device.

  7. Once your feet become noticeably moist, take your slippers off for a bit. This is usually after about 4 hour for me. It's important to let the slippers dry out after becoming a bit moist, otherwise you're on the runaway train to stink town.
