I went to Best Buy about 10 years ago, and bo9ught every blender they had, and had a test of which could crush ice. Then I brought back all the others. :)

Right now, I would get this one.

i hear the vitamix and blendtec are great blenders. the best consumer-priced blender i've used for smoothies is the oster fusion, for $70. it's got the all-metal drive, oster parts are ubiquitous, and it's got a smoothie mode that makes it easy as hell.

maybe not quite bi4l, but i got one for my mom, and it's seen regular use for the past couple years, and short of shattering the blender cup on the ground, it's showing no sign of deterioration.

I bought this one as well. It is a great blender. The blades go in reverse to help prevent air bubbles, and the motor has been sufficient for everything I've tried.

This is the one I've got: https://www.amazon.com/Oster-BRLY07-B-600-watt-7-Speed-Blender/dp/B000M3BTMI

I'm not counting on it to be BIFL, but I have run through blenders in a month or two before and this one does a great job and hasn't slowed down yet, through 2 years of heavy use.

Maybe not every all-metal drive blender is great, but I would guess that they are much more durable than plastic parts, in general.
