This would be nice.

With your edit, I would suggest a Panasonic Viera ST50.

It's plenty bright, thin, has better black levels than you can get with led lit TVs even with local dimming (unless you get into the $4000+ range) and you can get the 50" or 55" in your budget. I have two friends who recently both got this TV and are absolutely thrilled with it. I personally upgraded from a 240hz Samsung LCD to the Panasonic VT50 several months back.

The W8 uses an IPS panel, blacklevel wise you can't do much worse, and having your tv calibrated can't fix that.

Maybe you could try using some bias lighting to drown those mediocre black levels out. I'm planning on sticking an RGB LED strip on my set myself at some point. Others also use CCFL's, or so I've read.

Alternatively you could try an ST50 or GT50. (found this and this on Amazon) IR and burn in shouldn't be that bad, unless you play the same game a lot (and not much else to let the IR fade), but it's true that you need to be a bit mindful of it. I've had my GT50 for about 6 months and IR hasn't been an issue yet, as long as I use the scolling bar every now and then when stubborn IR does pop up. But ask the seller what their policy is regarding burn in just in case.

BTW You can find a 46'' HX850 on Amazon also.

Panasonic VIERA is the best plasma tv you can buy and you can get it under 1k. It has netflix, pandora, wireless and everything else you could want. I got them off amazon about two years ago, so mine is an older model but this is the exact same feature set and I paid like 900$ at the time.

Edit: I just saw your wanting a 55+ inch, which screws it up. Thats like $1500
