Light is light - a longer exposure on your DSLR would be the same as a stronger light source (until you get into really long exposures). You could probably find an old on-camera style flash unit with manual controls and aim it at a white card behind glass with the film on it (a Vivitar 285 is like $15 on eBay and is a killer thing for shooting with on non-TTL cameras). You can get a sheet of like 8" white plex 1/4" thick for ten bucks or so, great diffusion/mounting surface. I think you'd have a hard time beating DSLR quality.

I use a slide duplicator to scan 35mm (I mostly darkroom print), but if I wanted to scan MF, I'd just get a cheap cinema rail kit for the camera and add a bracket to attach a chunk or white plex. No alignment hassles, just a perfect little scanning rig for cheap.
