I worked at a high end pet store that really educated employees about the products and pet's needs and these were our best calming treats. They are not expensive online and are even on Prime if you have it. You can use them in conjunction with the thunder shirt and see how that works before turning to the vet for prescription meds. I had a lot of people with success stories that way.
You might also look into calming sprays that mimic dog's natural pheromones. This is supposed to be a good one and is also cheaper online.
Does your dog happen to be crate trained?
And just out of curiosity, what area do you live in where people are already setting off fireworks for the 4th of July?! I've never heard of that before.
I have an older JRT that gets nervous if we are gone for too long. I found calming chews that help him stay chill if a bunch of people/dogs are coming over or if we are gone for a few days. I know not everyone approves of "drugging" dogs, but they really do help to take the edge off for him. They aren't that expensive either.
