I carry one of these in my travel kit. I don't have to find a free power outlet, I just have to find one that someone is using and offer to share.
To date, I've never had anyone refuse and the couple of tech savy people who have inquired about the port wattage have been impressed.
It's super handy in hotel rooms too because I just plug the one charger in, and all my wife's devices adn mine charge from it. No digging around to find a charger for each phone, two tablets, a kindle, gopro, etc.

If you have high power devices like Moto Gs or something, you'll want higher power hubs. I nabbed a couple of these when the 7-port amazon-branded hubs couldn't keep up.
Since I scoop the majority of my household's phones off ebay, I don't usually have wall chargers (let alone good enough ones for a small flock of power-thirsty Motos) or I'd just use power strips.
I doubt it will work without a computer as it needs the communication to decide how much power to send. Although you might get away with a dummy USB plug with a resistor in the right place but I have no idea what that would be.

Add a heavy duty one of these and some tanks and you're good to go
