Depends on what you want to use it for.
Your app selection becomes considerably more convenient if you load the google play store:
http://www.s-config.com/root-the-ouya-google-play/
If you want to rock some multiplayer gaming and you have an XBox 360, one of these will be super handy (adapter to use your wifi controllers through Ouya USB):
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2/ref=sr_1_4/187-6579901-8733413?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1408936752&sr=1-4&keywords=xbox+360+wireless+adapter
Also, you'll want a nice spacious USB stick if you plan on storing lots of games:
http://www.amazon.com/PNY-Turbo-64GB-drive-P-FD64GTBOP-GE/dp/B00FDUHDAC/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1408936816&sr=1-6&keywords=64+gb+usb+flash+drive
If you're low on funds maybe just opt for 32 GB:

If you plan on using several USB peripherals, I really recommend a powered USB hub:
http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Port-12-5W-Power-Adapter/dp/B00483WRZ6/ref=sr_1_9?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1408936981&sr=1-9&keywords=powered+usb+hub
These are all suggestions and you likely have a bunch of this stuff already. Just know that most games work great with an xbox or PS3 controller. If you want just some cheap USB controllers for friends to play with, Gamestop is currently selling the Gamestick controller for $10. It's not wonderful, but that's why you make your friends use it :) YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY WITH GAME COMPATIBILITY. These worked for me with Towerfall and NES.EMU but not for some other games.
http://www.gamestop.com/android/accessories/gamestick-controller/109153
Must have apps:
Plex
FilePwn
NES.EMU
SNES9X
FPSe
Towerfall
Toto Temple Delux
Clarc
Meltdown
As for hiccups, when pairing controllers, you need to be very careful. Whenever I am pairing controllers I need to do things in this order for best results.
1.) Power on Ouya with nothing paired
2.) Pair all OUYA brand controllers
3.) Pair all PS3 Controllers
4.) Pair all USB (Xbox 360 Controllers)
If you try to do things out of order, things get screwy.
Other than that, just know that a lot of us have screwed with the thing quite a bit and if you have any questions we can likely help you out.
Welcome to the club!
I have the same one.
Is 10 USB ports enough?
Here's one, and it's not even overkill.
You end up with 2gH/s per ASIC miner, and with ten ASIC miners that means 20gH/s for $710.
According to this calculator, you end up with these results;
per Day 0.00033718 BTC or $0.15
per Week 0.00236029 BTC or $1.03
per Month 0.01026306 BTC or $4.49
It would pay for itself (assuming no electricity costs, and the difficulty doesn't change(it does, regularly)) in about 13 years.
So let's say you bought 50 of these, they are pretty small after all. It costs you $35,500 just to get started, and your likely hash rate is 1tH/s. The profits might look like this;
per Day 0.01685924 BTC $7.36
per Week 0.11801465 BTC $51.52
per Month 0.51315300 BTC $224.03
You still can't get a single bitcoin per day, or even month with this.
The Desk/Workspace:
PC:
Mac: 15" MacBook Pro, Core i7 2.5 GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD
Usage:
I don't have a KVM, but I simulate having one. All my peripherals - keyboard, mouse, webcam, left & right monitors, are plugged into the USB hub. In PC mode, the USB hub is plugged into the back of the Dell monitor, which is in turn plugged into the PC. In Mac mode, the USB hub is plugged directly into the MacBook Pro. I keep both a DVI cable (for the PC) and a DisplayPort cable (for the Mac) plugged into the Dell monitor, and I use the monitor controls to switch inputs when going between platforms.
I know there are software solutions for sharing keyboard/mouse between computers, but I'm generally working on one computer or the other - I'm rarely, if ever, working on both.
I use the MacBook Pro for daily work (Java/web development, Photoshop/Illustrator), and the PC for hobby work (C#/.NET) and gaming.
The MBP is thin enough that I can slide it under the keyboard to get a total of 4 screens. I generally use the MBP screen for Skype & Campfire windows.

Plugable USB 2.0 10 Port Hub (with Power Adapter)
$26.95 - I use on Mac Pro and it's nice to have lots of powered USB 2.0 ports.

Thanks for the heads up OP. There is also this product from pluggable. I got a couple at $19.99 the other day. Havent set these up yet but I have a few other devices from them that I'm very happy with. Their whole range of products seem to be of very good value and quality.

Would this work pretty well?
http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Technology-Chipsets-backwards-compatibility/dp/B00483WRZ6
Unfortunately neither of mine is very attractive.
I keep one of these in my travel bag: http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-USB-2-0-4-Port-Ultra-Mini/dp/B000Q8UAWY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334717528&sr=8-1
And this is on my desk: http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-USB-Port-Power-Adapter/dp/B00483WRZ6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1334717528&sr=8-2
I can vouch for them both working very very well.
My wife has one of these which is slightly better looking, but still doesn't really match the MacBook style: http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-USB-2-0-4-Port-White/dp/B000NB05MO/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1334717528&sr=8-11
I'll add that I have 2 usb hubs. One is a tiny 4 port, and the other is a 10 port with external power (I didn't have to have the external power plugged in for it to work). I tried using both with my RMX, but the only one that works is the 10 in 1. I bet it has something to do with the chips inside of the hub itself, but don't quote me.
Here's the 10 port hub that does work:
http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Port-12-5W-Power-Adapter/dp/B00483WRZ6/ref=sr_1_38?ie=UTF8&qid=1410282445&sr=8-38&keywords=usb+hub
This doesn't work:
http://www.amazon.com/Connectland-CL-U2MNHUB-4B-Ports-V2-0-Black/dp/B0028Y4F4S/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1410282486&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+hub+4+port
I found a nice powered 7 port USB hub that I mounted to my entertainment center.
This one to be exact...

FWIW, the main components are pretty close to my own system so I can vouch for not-a-piece-of-shit parts. I'm running that case, the IB version of that motherboard, a rebranded Seasonic PSU, a SS 840 SSD, a Gigabyte video card. Added bonus: use speedfan and its dead silent at idle/surfing/very light load.
Holler if you have any questions/comments/concerns.
Protip, don't install any of the ASUS "utilities."
Technically this is for the Xbone BUT since it does charging as well I would prob try this out as a controller hub as I assume this would have the power to support your setup you want to run: http://www.amazon.com/dreamGEAR-Xbox-One-3-0-USB-Hub/dp/B00F2Y1C9M
or there is this one http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00483WRZ6
I have this on my desktop
Plugable USB 2.0 10-Port High Speed Hub with 12.5W Power Adapter and Two Flip-Up Ports, $23. It's great. Has 10 ports (!), two flip-up ports (which are very nice for flash drives/etc), and is compact. No trouble yet. Only downside is USB2.0 (which for most things is fine).
I also have an Anker Uspeed USB 3.0 4-Port Hub + 5V 2.1A Charge-Only Port, basically 4-port USB3 with a 5th dedicated high amps charge-only port. Very nice. I've some other things from Anker too, 100% great stuff so far.

Does your laptop have 5 USB ports? If you're using a USB hub you may want to make sure that you are using a hub that is externally powered as opposed to one that is not. Your HDDs might be trying to draw more power than your computer supplies to the hub.
Out of curiosity, what do you use 8+ HDDs for?
Like this? http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Technology-Chipsets-backwards-compatibility/dp/B00483WRZ6
Not sure how I'd go about putting it together :o
Do 10 at a time

http://www.amazon.com/Generic-7-Port-USB-Hub-Port/dp/B007S642BW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1406586895&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+hub
I've been using this, but I don't recommend it since it loses power sometimes if I'm using too many devices (so what's the point of having all those ports).
I'm planning on getting
http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Port-12-5W-Power-Adapter/dp/B00483WRZ6/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1406586988&sr=8-7&keywords=usb+hub+powered
or something similar to that.
I've had really great success using a powered usb hub (if your external audio interface is USB) to remove hum and hard-disk/device noise.
http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-HUB10S-USB-2-0-Port/dp/B00483WRZ6/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1319189195&sr=1-1-catcorr
The DC adapter has no ground on this particular model, but I tend to always use a rackmount Furman power conditioner.
