You might want to consider buying an x-pen for when you leave your puppy at home. It will give her a little more room to roam (and you could control what goes into the x-pen) without needing to be leashed up. We left our puppy in his x-pen (for about the first 6 months of his life) when we would go to work during the day, and eventually he just learned to sleep while we were gone. Once we finally let him have free roam, we worked up in very small increments - like 20 minutes while we ran to the grocery store. We slowly built up the increments of time we left him, and eventually we were able to let him roam free by the time he was about 7 months old or so. Maybe we just got really lucky, because we're pretty sure he just sleeps by the door the whole time we're gone. But the x-pen is definitely a good option!

While dogs notoriously like dens (small spaces) and feel safe in them, I would have to imagine that just for general safety and visibility, it would be best to not put the dog under the bed. Puppies do really stupid things (like eat carpet/dust bunnies/cloth/whatever) and it would be best if the dog was in your sight. The idea of a pen is a great one though!! This is really commonly used, and the typically name you'll hear it called is an "Ex-pen" or exercise pen. These are actually so common, they're available on amazon!. If you can make one yourself, they are a really great way to make sure your puppy is safe when you cant watch them.

He wont need a lot of space since he is so small, so between your bed and a wall may work just fine. Its great you are so handy to be able to build this, they really mark them up.
