Yep it's not pro gear, but I always have one of these with me in my travels. I think they cost $10. I repeatedly find people with problems that I can improve greatly by throwing one of these at it. I just give them away.

Edit: My bad, they're $8 on amazon prime. http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-Pro-PDC21-Instrument-Balanced-Unbalanced/product-reviews/B0027V760M

Over 50' you will likely encounter a significant amount of hum/interference with a standard unbalanced connection. I would find a way to connect the 1/8" stereo jack to a DI Box with something like this. Then you could run a 50' XLR cable to the speaker and then back to 1/4" input with this.

Or just connect this with this between laptop and speaker and deal with a potentially very loud ground hum.

So my school has two of these DI boxes https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0027V760M/ref=twister_B00W2GJIH6?_encoding=UTF8&th=1 and it has the attenuation switch options at -60db, -30db, and 0db (pretty sure about those numbers). Just curious in what scenarios should I have the ATT switch set to each level?

Also if you were to recommend an upgrade from those DI boxes that would be nice for electric guitar/electric bass but not too pricey what would you recommend? (think between $50-125 maybe?)

Hi! I have the 2i2 and had a similar issue. The 2i2 lacks the handy "pad" switch that other models have. This seems to be a crucial part of tracking dynamic instruments like bass and guitar. I bought a $10 Pyle DI box and used the DB switch on the Pyle as a "pad" instantly fixed the peaking issues I was having on bass and guitar.

Yep that's the one. I'd go for a few of them if I were you. Obviously would never use in place of a Radial, but when you're in a pinch, even for just a guitar player's 1/4" that just isn't quite long enough, it can save the day.

Most laptops only have a headphone output jack, so you'll need an input jack, and you can buy external USB soundcard with an input on it.

Then you need to find out if that input jack can be set to line level or mic level. Sometimes you can switch between the two.

The mixer will be sending line level out. If you can set the laptop to line level in, then you are all good, all you need is a cable that has an XLR on one end, and a mini 3.5mm jack on the other end. You might have to use an XLR to 1/4" jack cable and then use an adapter to change the 1/4" jack down to a 3.5mm mini. (Or XLR to XLR cable with an adapter on the end to change it to 3.5mm mini)

If the laptop will only accept Mic level, then you need the same sort of setup, but you'll run it through a Direct Box which is a transformer that can switch line level signals to mic level signals.

Hopefully you can go down and take a look at everything before the day of the event. Take good notes and pictures of what is down there. Then make yourself a checklist so you don't forget anything on the day of the event.

I gotta ask about the Pyle DIs. I've looked at them a few times and the thought of, "damn, they're so cheap if they're crap whatever, plus if they get lost/stolen/broken their still so cheap", but I haven't been able to get someones 2¢ on it, care to provide one? (also is this the version you have? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0027V760M/)
Thanks in advance!

What do you mean by line level output? As in-- it just needs an XLR/1/4" output?

I'm thinking about buying this one, if it helps: http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-Pro-PDC21-Instrument-Balanced-Unbalanced/dp/B0027V760M/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1410896373&sr=1-2

This inexpensive DI box from Pyle-Pro is adequate for entry-level recording. Keep in mind this is a passive direct box and therefore will affect the tone of what you are recording. It's not hugely noticeable, and if you're just getting into recording this isn't a huge deal. But if you get serious about recording guitar and bass in the future and want an upgrade, the Countryman Type 85 DI box is excellent, and it's what I use on a regular basis.

this. DI it. If they're just ideas use virtual amps for the time being. once you've done what you need to, just re-record it in the morning, as your current set up sounds like it is BAD ASS.

Edit:
Speaking of basses, I recently got an ibanez sr400 for some messing around with ideas. any tips for going DI into the DAW to make it sound good? My interface has built in compression, should I start with that? (saffire pro 24 dsp)
