I travel quite a lot and seldom take more than a day sack, which is plenty. Most people overpack because they worry. You only need clothes, washbag, towel and charger for most trips - anything else is optional. Some things that come to mind:

  • When you pack, fold your clothes and lay them on top of your towel, then wrap them in it before they go in your bag.
  • Take 2-3 of each item of normal clothing, but only one of each item of situational clothing (sweater, waterproof, swim trunks).
  • When you get to a place you're staying overnight, take the towel bundle from your bag and unfold, so you can see what you have available and what needs washing. Clean clothes go at one edge of the towel, dirty at the other.
  • Wash your clothes in the sink or shower in the mornings and leave them to dry throughout the day as it's warmer, if they're not dry by the evening then you still have the night to dry them.
  • Washing clothes the night before you need them does not work unless all your clothes are quick drying, which is great but can be expensive.
  • Ensure all devices you take require the same charger, or buy an adapter (they're tiny and usually cheap). I use the raspberry pi plug, as it comes with all 3 types of plug: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Portable-Computer-Chargers-Power-Supplies/Raspberry-Pi-adapter-UK-EU-5V-5A/B01CCR5P8U
  • Soap is more compact than shower gel, but is a pain to store once used. Take a couple of small bags to seal it in while moving on if you go with soap.
  • A quick drying towel is really handy.

The official pi adapter not good enough? Just bought one for my nespi case. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01CCR5P8U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

>So I've got this charger. It's a new charger, cable all looks good and is about 1.5m long.

That looks like the official power supply and I trust that seller not to sell fakes.

✔️ Power OK

>This SD Card

✔️ SD Card OK

>unplugged the fan ... external drive is self-powered via AC

✔️ Peripherals OK

>I haven't overclocked the Pi myself, and a arm_freq gives me 1400.

✔️ Clock probably OK

>I'm on the LibreELEC 9.0.1.

✔️ That seems to be the latest. It's still possible something could be messed up on your install. If a fresh image doesn't resolve the problem, you could try rolling back one version to LibreELEC-RPi2.arm-9.0.0.img.gz.

>I forgot to mention that when you power back up, it has updated the library with the new media!

⚠️ That's odd. Does it completely finish the library update, or just part of it?

>it doesn't crash when the external drive isn't plugged in

⚠️ That seems like a strong indication that the USB drive has something to do with it, but I can't imagine what. It has its own AC power adapter, so it probably isn't pulling voltage down when it spins up. If the drive isn't too full, would you consider reformatting it? I'd be interested to know if it behaves differently after formatting as a different file system, like ext4. You can go a step further and wipe out the whole partition table. I think LibreELEC should have the commands you need in order to format a drive from the terminal/ssh.

First of all, let me thank you for such a detailed and well thought out post!

So I've got this charger. It's a new charger, cable all looks good and is about 1.5m long.

This SD Card

This cooling/case I have unplugged the fan, it's too loud. I'm looking for a quiet fan, but the heatsinks seem to have been adequate for now, I think.

My external drive is self-powered via AC, although it is not the best drive, it does work. I can access and play all of the media just fine, it's just that last stage of scanning the library where it all goes wrong. I forgot to mention that when you power back up, it has updated the library with the new media!

I'm currently moving a file over to /storage and I will try scanning library without the external drive plugged in to see if it makes a difference.

I did have a fan plugged in, but it was too noisy so it's out for now. I haven't overclocked the Pi myself, and a arm_freq gives me 1400.

I did think about overvolting. It's something to explore if all else fails.

I'm on the LibreELEC 9.0.1.

So, it doesn't crash when the external drive isn't plugged in and scanning the library, but there is only 1 media file to find.

I've looked around and I think that the WiFi on my rpi isn't working because it is under-voltaged so I'm gonna order this (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Raspberry-Pi-Power-adapter-UK/dp/B01CCR5P8U/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8)
and then hopefully it will work tomorrow if not I will have to figure out whatever problem is causing this.

The really unfortunate thing is that it's 20% dearer than the official Raspberry Pi PSU.
