Oh wow I had no idea consumer grade depth cameras that do background removal existed but apparently they totally do. E.g. found this one https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Stargazer-Depth-Sensing-Webcam-1080P/dp/B01GE9QM5M Thank you for the tip 😊 Reviews aren't great though, I think this tech is still really early...

not a problem. if you need to get into recording at a decent level, the other mics are very good at what they do, but it's a definite "deep end" of technology and cost.

The world of audio recording goes very technically deep and getting decent results versus good, moderate or excellent results is a question of time and resources you probably won't ever need to even know about. Unless you do foley work, instrument recording, vocals, or podcasting/streaming, or make movies, master audio tracks, compose your own music etc.

having a computer takes a lot of effort out of the equation, since computers can adjust volume on the fly, and also do reasonably fast edits, normalize the overall/peak volumes, pop filtering and noise cancellation/replacement with free tools and a few minutes.

But, given the needs of most people in discord, i.e. chat, you probably will get by with the boompro as it's sort of a "known quantity" and headsets are on the whole, far easier to manage since they focus so much on speech.

about the only thing you ever need to know is to bend the boom away from your mouth so you don't 'spit' or cough directly into the mic end, i.e. if you open your mouth wide, have the boom follow your jaw line to the end so it's recording just below your chin. that will prevent clipping when you cough or breathe out quickly and be close enough to capture whispering, etc.

This is why you see screens (pop filters), elaborate wire mesh or foam inserts around mic's, to prevent the mic from being pushed around by a strong breeze, physical shock or coughing into the mic.

If you run into conferences or do streaming, then you might have better luck with stereo dynamic mics on the higher end 3D cameras, i.e. the razer stargazer which is a bit buggy, but the higher end cameras have cardioid or omnidirectionals for focusing on the room audio or towards the camera.
