The Road Less Travelled

I like it because it's not schmaltzy. It grapples honestly and bravely with the fact that life is difficult, and that being in conflict is an essential part of being in the world.

A few words on it from Wikipedia:

"Peck’s book begins with the profound truth that "Life is difficult". We must attest to the fact that life was never meant to be easy, and that it is nothing but a battlefield of problems.
...
Peck defines discipline as the basic set of tools we require to solve life’s problems. These tools are delaying gratification, assuming responsibility, dedication to the truth, and balancing. These are techniques of suffering, means by which we experience the pain of problems in such a way as to work through them and solve them successfully, learning and growing in the process. Most of us do not want to wrestle with our problems because of the pain involved. Yet, it is only in grappling with our problems that life has its meaning."

p.s. I also like The Artist's Way for this reason, it's a different response to a similar take on life.

edit: tidied up my prose.

Have you made changes to your lifestyle? Exercise, diet, sleep, being outdoors more, etc? Have you unplugged from social media which feeds narrow, unchallenged thinking? I unsubscribed from political subs as all the Trump and Brexit stuff was becoming overwhelming. I tried to remove advertising from my life, no TV, used ad blockers, and I actively ignore it in other situations. Adverts are created to make you dissatisfied. And so on.

If you have some money or can save up, getting away can help. In south america, or east asia, really cheap hostels, simple food, nothing extravagant, nothing touristy (no elephant rides, or white water rafting), you can live on $10-20 a day travelling round. That's cheaper than staying at home. A change of scene, and some time out from your normal day-to-day can help you get perspective, shake you out of old habits, create new ones, make you more self-reliant, create a sense of achievement (not just in the EA sense), but seriously.

I said in another comment that I recommended a book, The Road Less Travelled. The first half at least is good for anyone, good psychology, the second half is perhaps too spiritual for some, but I like it. Put it on a wishlist and I'll buy it for anyone who asks.

As the author said:

> Entering psychotherapy is an act of the greatest courage.

You have my admiration for starting CBT.
