I can recommend a brand of brushes, but I never buy the prepacked brush sets that manufacturers offer.

Assuming you're US based, go to an art store. The kind of brushes you are looking for are referred to as "golden talkon" brushes (their bristle material), which a yellow/orange color to them. When you run your fingers through the bristle, it will be very soft.

The particular brand I usually get (easily found at dick blick art supplies) is from the Princeton Brush company.

Anything similar is fine.

I recommend getting several brushes. Because you're brush painting, you will want a wider brush for the wide open areas when you're just laying down an overall color.

So the ones I would recommend are:

  1. 1/4inch wide brush (marked as a number 54 brush)
and then a few smaller brushes for detail work.
  2. 1 sized round brush
  3. 5/0 brush (you'll note that these look really small
  4. 10/0 brush

The last time I wrote something like this, I recommended a brush pack, though honestly, you're probably better off raiding the art store. The art store will cost just a little bit more, but the brushes will probably be better.

Get a pack with sizes like that. The sizes you want will be 1/4inch, a size 3 brush, 1, and maybe 5/0 or 10/0 for the detail work. I use as small as 20/0.

Personally, I despise enamels for their horrific smell. I've used acrylics more or less from the beginning, but people do get good results with enamels. For the sake of easier cleanup and the like, I prefer acrylic.

The main acrylic lines I use are Tamiya (for spraying, not brush painting, they are notoriously difficult to brush paint; however, there is a tutorial here on someone who is quite good at it: https://zerobxu.wordpress.com/2008/03/10/hand-painting-with-tamiya-acrylics/)

The secondary line I use (and particularly for brush painting) is Model Master Acrylic, which provides for very good color selections, and is very brushable paint. However, and do NOT ignore this: you NEED to spray primer onto the model (or brush paint it, though spray would be better, e.g. out of a can) prior to using the model master acrylic paint, or it won't stick properly. What I normally use is a primer coat of tamiya XF-19 sky gray (mostly because it's just light gray).

Other acrylics I've used are Vallejo paints, which are highly regarded among the figure painting set (which is largely brush painted).

As for how to paint with brushes, I did a build that was exclusively brush painted about a year ago just to see how it would result.

The gray color you see on the F-18 is entirely brush painted, using a 1/4in brush.
