Built a little HA RPI3 touchscreen for the kitchen. I thought I would share. I still have some organization to do with HA, but I have only been at it a few weeks.

> I want to be able to take it with me like to college or on a road trip and play it on a small screen but when I get somewhere with a tv I can pop the HDMI in and we can play it on the tv. So any help or advice?

Most screens for the Pi utilize the GPIO pins. Unfortunately, when you plug in an HDMI cable, it doesn't take precedence over the GPIO. There's no auto switch the moment the HDMI is inserted.

If you're still interested in creating a somewhat portable RetroPie, I've done it with:

  • Official Raspberry Pi screen
  • Raspberry Pi screen and board case - There's 2 major options here. Option 1 or Option 2
  • A portable battery pack - This one is just an example, there's so many to choose from with size and weight being the biggest factors.

Again, this is hassle-free and the quickest route to go. What you'll still need:

  • Bluetooth controller
  • Headphones
  • Industrial velcro (for attaching the battery pack)

I can go into more detail if you're interested in something like this.

Well /s

Seriously though, here is a listing for a case that fits the screen. You can at least get L and W from that.

Then the Pi's themselves are just running Chrome in Kiosk mode displaying some web pages I'm hosting which pull in all the RSS Feeds / statistics. The Pi's also periodically query my Windows machine to check the power state of my monitors, so they only display stuff when I'm actually at my desk.

It's an Apache 1800 case from Harbor Freight. The official Raspberry pi 7 inch touch screen. And this enclosure https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01GQFUWIC/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1525449943&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=raspberry+pi+7"+touchscreen+display&dpPl=1&dpID=419Hbl3TjhL&ref=plSrch

I used some strong tape to attach the removable backing from the screen enclosure so that you can attach the screen to the backing and that's how it sticks to the case. I needed a battery bank with at least two outputs so I can provide enough amperage to power the screen and pi. Try go get the smallest bank you can. Mine a little big and I had to remove most of the foam to fit it, the control and all the wiring.

I don't have any speakers in it yet. I'm still trying to figure that part out.

I liked this combo, which is a touchscreen and a case:

https://www.amazon.com/Raspberry-Pi-7-Inch-Touch-Screen/dp/B01GQFUWIC/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1527104691&sr=8-4-fkmr2&keywords=element14+raspberry+pi++touchscreen+and+case

look down in the page to get the screen as well. I have used them both for a year and they are awesome!

Thanks for the reply.

Ok, so, I plug the phone (which has quick charging) into the Pi to run AA, and connect my phone to the car's bluetooth stereo, and that keeps steering wheel controls. Awesome. From what I gathered, it seemed like it could, but I wanted to double check.

I have a quick charger that that has two USB ports. Do I need more than that, or will 2 do? https://www.amazon.com/Charger-Compatible-Devices-Anker-PowerDrive/dp/B07H4LH6P7/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=anker+car+charger&qid=1554666838&s=wireless&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1

I was planning on housing it all in this: https://www.amazon.com/Raspberry-Pi-7-Inch-Touch-Screen/dp/B01GQFUWIC/ -- since the HMDI port is accessible, which I'm assuming I'll need if I end up adding a back-up camera.

And yah, good tip. I'll definitely build it out of my car to test everything before I install it.

What I'm looking at when the time comes. Can't "recommend" it because I obviously just said I don't have it yet but these

The battery is a "pocket juice" battery, with 20 ,000 mah. cant find the model. I hope this helps

Looking at getting a PiJuice. Has anyone used it with the official display? Does anyone know if it will fit in one of these cases?

u/Walmart_Valet · 1 pointr/crankshaft

I have the official case from Raspberry Pi and its pretty good. It doesnt come with a way of mounting so I am currently working on mounting in my car but it won't benefit anyone else unless you have a 08' Hyundai Elantra...

There is the SmartPi Touch case that has two different kinds of mounting feet that might work for most people

u/Wasd9595 · 1 pointr/raspberry_pi

Talking about this one? Does it have space for battery, booster and such?

u/hellosenor_howisyou · 1 pointr/raspberry_pi

Oh really? Do you think that it would fit this? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GQFUWIC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_SKbjDb67508Z4 I’ve been looking for a case for when I buy one.

u/alias_neo · 1 pointr/raspberry_pi

I use something like this.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Case-Raspberry-Pi-Official-Touchscreen/dp/B01GQFUWIC

The one I have is bamboo, but same idea. It works great and I have it sitting next to me on the desk now.

u/shagieIsMe · 1 pointr/Hue

My original thought was to get a a raspberry pi with a touch screen case could be used as a switch. The raspberry pi, being fully aware of the time, could then choose which scene to activate based on the time.

Noting the "other devices have something", I dug into the hue developer api docs and realize that this is how the switches (and dimmers) are implemented along with the flexibility of the command section to send changes back to itself.

So, one would have the different scenes for the different times, and then set up timers to put the changes for the scenes into the different rules that handle the "when this is pushed".
