There not bad, at least for me, I know some of the tinier guys and bigger guys have problems with the strap not going small or big enough around the leg. The one I link I'm not completely sure its what we use but ours also has a velcro strap on the back so I guess if you need to you can hook it onto your duty belt. As for the canister staying in I've never had a problem, but you know everybody's mileage seems to vary.
Also I'm not sure which safariland holster you were refering to but I found these two on amazon, Oversized Open and Opened Topped
