Spy Tec G1WH. Capable of wide angle, and 1080p/30fps recording. The way it works is that it records in 5 minute blocks - once it runs out of room in the memory card, it overwrites the oldest block. The caveat is that it doesn't play well with Class 10 micro sd cards, so I use a 32GB Class 6. I believe I have an 8-10 hour window of current 1080p footage, which should be more than sufficient.

I also purchased a dashcam hard-wire kit, in conjunction with an add-a-fuse kit. It might sound daunting to a layman, but it was actually incredibly simple to wire up. With it, the dashcam turns on when I turn the car on (I wired it in to the car stereo), and turns off when I turn the car off. This was necessary for me because one alternative, using a power adapter plugged into the cigarette lighter, wouldn't work due to my cigarette lighter always being powered, even when the truck is turned off. Also, my install is clean as hell - the only things visible are the cam itself, and about four inches of power wire running up to the headliner.

Here are the specific items I purchased, on Amazon:

Dashcam, $53 Prime

Hardwire kit, $15 shipped

Add-A-Fuse, $11 Prime

Rearview mirror mount, $9 Prime

Class 6 32GB MicroSDHC + adapter if you don't already have one, $16 Prime

Running total for everything above, to your door, about $105. Install takes about ten-fifteen minutes by yourself. You can probably get a local shop to do it if you prefer, for a cost. Hell, I'd even lend a hand if you wanted, so long as you promise you aren't a total fucking weirdo.

Edit to answer your second question: Yeah, I like it. For $100, it's probably the best quality you'll find. With it installed, I often forget it's even there; it's tucked away behind my mirror. The peace of mind that it adds, should I ever need it myself, is great. Also, catching stuff like what's in the video is a huge bonus!

Alright, when it comes to SD/mSD cards I almost always recommend the Samsung ones. I've yet to be disappointed in any of them, and a lot of people tend to agree. Kingston and SanDisk are also pretty good, but if you can pay the few extra dollars, go with Samsung. I'll try to give you a TL;DR of them, though.

Basically, you want anywhere from a 4GB to a 32GB. (64GB is possible, but it requires a small bit of tech know-how to convert it to FAT32. Guides are easy enough to find for that, but I'm too tired to explain it.) Asides the actual space on the card, there's two other factors: read/write speed and the Class. Really, any of the classes will be fine, but most people recommend a 6-10, since they generally have the best speeds. (I believe the SD in the original XL was a Class 4?)

So basically when you look up the cards there will be a speed rating (#MB/s) and a Class. Really, the bigger the numbers the better, but the bigger the numbers also means bigger the price. So if you want the best ones for cheap prices, you'll probably want to look for ones with 20-50MB/s speeds. They have some faster than that, but they're going to be 1.5-2x more expensive, and a 3DS really doesn't need that kind of speed. Anything in that range is really more for things that deal with large amounts of data at a time, or need to keep up with things like HD recording and what-not. So anything above a Class-10/50MB/s is, in my opinion, a waste of money on a device like a 3DS. (Really, a Class-6 is fine.)

Hopefully that helps a bit?

If you're still not sure, here's my recommended mSD cards:
---

  • Samsung Class-6 (24MB/s) - This one is the more budget friendly of the two. It's a great card with good enough speeds for anything the 3DS would need. It's $7-12 depending on how much space you'd like.
  • Samsung Evo Class-10 (48MB/s) - Higher end card with really good speeds. This would probably be the best card without being complete overkill that you could get. They range from $11-35 depending on size, but I would recommend sticking with 32GB. If you want more than 32GB and are willing to learn how to format it, go for it. I wouldn't do anything higher than 64GB, though. One, because of the price, and two, because I'm not sure if the 3DS will read anything higher than 64GB at all.

This is the one I use. Worked right out of the box. [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IVPU7DQ/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_gVGeub03S2PB1] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IVPU7DQ/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_gVGeub03S2PB1) I got it after unsuccessfully trying a SanDisk 32GB class 4 card.
