That disk would work. All 2.5" drives are standard but i would seriously recommend you look at an SSD. It makes the OS a lot more responsive and makes it feel like a whole new computer.

It should also be noted that the drive you have picked is a 5400rpm drive meaning it is even slower than a standard mechanical drive.

They are a lot more expensive mind.

This drive (which is the slowest of the ones i suggest) is £15 more than the one you suggested but 2x as big. If you don't need the space then you can get yours.

This one is 750GB (1.5x as big as yours) but is 7200rpm. Therefore it is faster and will make your computer more responsive. It is the same price as yours. (I would go for this one if you want to save money)

Here is an example of SSD performance vs a normal mechanical hard drive

This SSD is half the size of yours and ~£120 but will be a lot faster

This is one of the best hard drives available at the minute. It's half the size of yours and ~£165

From top to bottom, the hard drives will perform better. You can buy a smaller SSD if you want to save money, but i went with 250GB because i find that to be an acceptable amount to have as your sole hard drive. It's certainly doable with 128GB of storage space though.

Your question would probably do a bit better in /r/buildapc but here is ok.

>he drive doesn't have to be an official Sony one right?

Nope, it can be any laptop HDD! Has to be 9.5mm though! Most are, but some 1TB might be 12mm and those wont fit.

I am using the WD Black 7200RPM 750GB
http://www.amazon.com/Black-250-Mobile-Hard-Drive/dp/B001CO3EKG

You could also get a cheaper 5400RPM drive (That type is in PS3 stock) or 5400 and something bigger like
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-2-5-Inch-Internal-Notebook/dp/B007PG25UU/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1372845305&sr=1-7&keywords=seagate+momentus

or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148371

But seeing as something like
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-Internal-Notebook-ST9750420AS/dp/B004MME0N0/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1372845305&sr=1-3&keywords=seagate+momentus

is not that much more expensive I would not go below 500GB.

Do NOT get the WD Blue series for PS3. From what I read when I was upgrading mine they have a too aggressive head parking "feature" to save power so the head parks and takes a while to spin up again.

that drive would work, but honestly, if you spend $25 more, you can get a way nicer drive:

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-Internal-Notebook-ST9750420AS/dp/B004MME0N0

750GB (not 320GB), NEW (not refurbished), 7200 RPM (not 5400 RPM) drive.

or for even better performance, spend a $1.50 more and get the 500GB hybrid drive:

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-Solid-Hybrid-ST95005620AS/dp/B003NSBF32/

that's the one I am using.

So it is just any 2.5" drive for laptops? Any other specifics I should be worried about?

Would this one work in a Slim PS3? $80 seems like a good deal for a 750 gig hard drive.

u/AdonisChrist · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I've searched further. Regarding Sager laptops, none offer my desired bang for my desired buck. Although some do fall within my noted price range, I found a much better deal.

While researching the Acer model I found above (after round 2 of Can I Find a Better Deal?), I found that the Acer store was selling a similar model (3rd from the bottom compared to the original second from the bottom) for over $100 less than newegg had the comparable model. The only difference? The cheaper one came with a single 750GB HD instead of two 500's.

Well, considering that I'd already decided that any 5400rpm HDD was going to need replacing, and had spent the hour or two prior pricing out a 128GB SSD and a 750GB 7200rpm HDD, the included hard drive(s) didn't really matter much to me.

Plus I found cheaper hard drives on amazon and am set to save ~ $20.

Anyhow, for review:

128GB SSD - $100

750GB HDD - $75

'dat Laptop - $750

total cost = $925

and it blows my expectations of a laptop out of the water, with the possibility for further RAM expansion and an upgrade to a larger SSD instead of the 7200rpm HDD whenever such becomes financially feasible.

edit: and, whenever I feel like it, I can upgrade to 16GB of RAM for just another $100

> Looking for a replacement harddrive for my Acer aspire 5742. The drive 750GB. Can I put a bigger drive in, does it have to be the same size, what type is best? Kind of new at this?

It's 1 standard size for ALL laptops, regardless of 500gb or 750gb or 1 terabyte.

That is 2.5"

You can put in ANY 2.5" (2.5 inch) SSD or hard drive and it will fit perfectly.

Example of a valid option if you don't find one here:

https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-Internal-Notebook-ST9750420AS/dp/B004MME0N0/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1521642608&sr=8-5&keywords=750gb+2.5%22&dpID=51%252B4IKXS5wL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

As long as it says 2.5" you're gucci. You can also even do a 2.5" SSD if you want something crazy fast... however they are MUCH more expensive.

You're also not limited by brand. Any 2.5" will do.
