Description: Amazing looking watch with a eye-catching, yet classy green sunburst dial with a polished silver body providing a nice contrast. Classic field watch from Seiko released in honor of pioneers who explored the mountains. The numbers are in gold, with gold hours, minutes, and seconds hands filled with lume. It has an inner dial that functions as an approximate compass when aligned with the sun. There is the day, white on black background at the 3 o ' clock position.
The stock leather strap is a bit stiff out of the box, but it softens up and forms to your wrist after a couple of weeks. I rubbed in a bit of 99% aloe vera to speed up the softening process. It worked and added a nice patina too. I absolutely love this watch. AMA.

Description: Another great Seiko in this price range, and a sub favourite. The green sunburst dial with gold markings is just stunning. The inner rotating compass bezel is more stylish than useful but, like the cathedral hands, just fits with the coherent overall theme - it's not called the Alpinist for nothing. 50 hour power reserve, great lume, 200m WR, sapphire crystal, and all the build quality and accuracy you expect from Seiko in this price range. Looks good on a bracelet but, to my mind, best on a brown leather strap. The latest in a line with a strong history as well - there are some really nice vintage Alpinist models out there.
THESE ARE IN STOCK AT AMAZON RIGHT NOW FOR ~$356~

Still not entirely sure why everyone has such a love affair with the Alpinist, but buying it with a warranty is still (for the moment) an option.

Gee, a whopping $28 savings over the average price.
Does anything exciting ever come out of Massdrop?
What? That money you could use for a house would get you a sweet watch! JK. Good idea. I'd look at the Seiko's and Orients then. Especially a tool watch. Seiko Alpinist is a really awesome watch that crosses between formal and tool and it has a lot of the qualities of a more expensive luxury watch. https://www.amazon.ca/Seiko-Mechaical-Alpinist-Automatic-Sarb017/dp/B000KG93BQ
Well there's the 36mm Orient FEM6Q00DF9 and it's sibling BEM6Q002F, when you can find 'em. Oh, FEM0401NX and BEM6Q004X too. Then there's the Seiko SARB017. Swatch YGG406 too if you like the style and don't mind Swatch. Victorinox 241292 could be cool too.
If all else fails, head on over to https://www.russian-watches.info/ and browse. It's impossible not to find something small in green and gold. Check out this Poljot, or this Raketa.

Just wanted to point out they’re selling new on amazon for $356 right now.

Amazon is selling it for $375 US.
I bought my brother an Alpinist for a significant birthday.
I'd recommend getting some more colorful watches most of the ones you own a fairly monochromatic. In particular, I'd recommend the Seiko Alpinist. The submariner looks amazing btw :) https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SARB017-Mechanical-Alpinist-Automatic/dp/B000KG93BQ?tag=wyca-20&SubscriptionId=AKIAIQ6HXOSAWLBRLPBQ&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B000KG93BQ
Never heard of the Reverie before but I found the swirling dial rather stunning. Having said that, you're paying almost every single cent for the look. Yes it's all stainless steel, sapphire crystal with AR coating, and an entry-level Miyota movement.
For about the same price, you can buy a Seiko Alpinist, which looks somewhat similar to the Sea-Spirit. The size of the Seiko is more in line with the traditional dress watch size (38mm), similar but probably slightly better movement, better water resistance and Seiko's own in-house made crystals are some of the best money can buy.
For me, the Seiko is one of the best looking watch at its price point.
Firstly this was a highly interesting thread.
As for my list of brands, which I for simplicity sake try to stick to (makes it easier with sizing). This list is a work in progress since there are a few staple wardrobe items that I have yet to find any specific brand that fits my size and budget.
Work/everyday
Shirts: Eton
Dress pants: Hacket
Dress shoes: Carmina (although this is my most diverse category)
Weekends/casual
Jeans: Levis
Outdoor clothing: Fjällräven
Casual shoes: Converse or Haglöfs depending on how outdoorsy I am feeling.
Accessories
Since most of these items are intended for at least 5-10years of use its a bit of a stretch to say that I have decied on a brand for life but for completeness sake:
Wallet: Mokkolabs A small Estonian etsy shop I have had one of these in brown for 4years and it ages beautifully.
Watch: Seiko SARB017 still looking for a few strap options, currently I am using the original leather strap and an original seiko bracelet depending on mood and outside temperature.
Underwear
Undershirts/boxers: Dilling I believe that this is a danish company. However they make excellent merino wool underwear and provide easy shipping to the Nordics.
ELI5 quartz watch: vibration of a quartz crystal measures watch, most common modern type. Automatic watch uses kinetic movement (such as wrist moving back and forth while walking) to power a spring which keeps the watch moving, with a power reserve for when it's sitting (like in a case, or you're at a desk).
Chronograph is just a fancy term for stopwatch, but otherwise minimalist is pretty easy to work around. No shame in being a noob, we all were at one point.
On the pricier side, the Seiko Alpinist is a fairly minimalist. Rotating compass on the inside, brown leather strap, green background. Automatic movement with 60-hour reserve.
Slightly less pricey is the Seiko Prospex SRPA21, or the "Pepsi" diver. Diver watch, pretty good entry watch, also an Automatic movement as well.
In the 100-250 range, you could look at any Citizen Eco-Drive watch as well. There's too many variations to list out, but my favorite would be this stainless steel CA0621-05L. Chronograph feature, eco-drive is a quartz solar-powered movement unique to citizen, but other companies do solar powered quartz as well (namely Seiko with the Solar line).
Seiko Alpinist. $364.75 from Amazon. Cheers!
$475 on Amazon but you get free shipping / returns / guarantee it’s new....
For your purpose I say look towards something like Seiko Alpinist SARB017.
Great for hiking and adventuring.
It can be dressed up or down and it is a watch that is meant to take a beating and go on adventures.
The strap it originally comes with is hot trash but you can buy a bracelet for it off Seiya for about $140 or just using a NATO.
I personally believe the watches you linked albeit attractive are not meant to be used outside of dressy venues (Though casual can apply too)

Safe to buy from Amazon, generally?

I bought mine from Seiya, great guy with great customer service. But right now, looks like Amazon is your best bet
Amazon has it
With only what you put. This seems to have the Egyptian vibe to it and gold. And it's a great quality watch
https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SARB017-Mechanical-Alpinist-Automatic/dp/B000KG93BQ
It's one of those watches that looks amazing in real life, pictures won't do justice.
I am looking for 2 new straps for my alpinist and a hamilton khaki field:

https://www.longislandwatch.com/Horween_INS_HOR02_watch_strap_p/ins-hor02.htm
Not sure what will match well with what....
I would like the 2 straps interchange and match the alpinist with the hamilton. Thank you for your opinions.
The Seiko Alpinist is a beautiful watch with a green dial.
http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Mechaical-Alpinist-Automatic-Sarb017/dp/B000KG93BQ
I don't know anything about that brand, or that watch, but it did make me think of the [$115 Seiko SNKM97] (https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNKM97-Analog-Automatic-Stainless/dp/B00M0YKOWI) which also has a green dial ([Google Image Search images] (https://www.google.com/search?q=SNKM97&safe=off&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjvstPV1crUAhUBFGMKHcOEBXUQ_AUIDCgD&biw=1805&bih=1344) are better than the Amazon photo).
You could also look at two other Seiko's with green dials: [the $415 Seiko Alpinist] (https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SARB017-Mechanical-Alpinist-Automatic/dp/B000KG93BQ) or [the $60 SNK805] (https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK805-Automatic-Stainless-Canvas/dp/B000LTAY1U).
All of these Seiko's are well regarded, quality products (I own a SNK805). They're mechanical watches, not quartz. The first one, the Seiko "Recraft" SNKM97 is (I think) the only one with a "sunray" radiant dial.
Get two, one for everyday: https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SARB017-Mechanical-Alpinist-Automatic/dp/B000KG93BQ
And for suit and tie: https://www.amazon.com/SEIKO-Mechanical-Elegant-Automatic-SARB065/dp/B0038OLUMM
With your budget, I would look at either the SARB033 or the SARB017.
I own both, they are magnificent pieces. I have a slight preference for the 017.
Also, heads up, they SARB017 comes with a crappy strap so you'll need to budget for that as well. I rock a brown Hirsch Mariner on it.
It depends on the type of watch you'd like to get him. Seiko makes watches similar to the Tudor North Flag (which seems to have a Rolex Explorer I vibe going). Maybe an Alpinist, which is popular on here nowadays? The Longines Conquest could also stand in nicely, and it's sub-$1k on the grey market.
Bronze may be a good substitute for gold, and he seems to like tool/dive watches, in which case Halios is an option (the Tropik B also works with his wrist size). No display back though.
In the "quality $1k" category I also always think of Stowa. They make a beautiful marine watch with white dial, workhorse ETA movement, and display back for under $1k after converting to USD and dropping VAT.

Look into the Seiko Alpinist. It has a rotating bezel with the cardinal directions under the crystal.

They're all leather bands, but you can swap in a bracelet for like $50-$80. If you don't want to do that, you can get this one. or this Orient.

Seiko Men's ' Japanese Automatic Stainless Steel and Leather Casual Watch, Color:Brown (Model: SARB017) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KG93BQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_jtRdBbPSY90X2
Not too knowledgeable on watches, do you mean this one?
Looking to get the [Seiko] (https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SARB017-Mechanical-Alpinist-Automatic/dp/B000KG93BQ) Alpinist as my first >$60 watch, looks great in pictures and on display in the shops, but I'm worried that the green face would make it harder to coordinate with outfits. I feel like I'm overthinking it though, I can't actually imagine anything it would clash with that isn't ugly on its own anyway. What do you guys think?
Also, in addition to a brown leather strap, what color NATOs would work with it? And is it dressy enough to wear with a suit?
That Certina is powered by an ETA 2824-2. Now, this is definitely the wrong forum to go against anything Seiko-related, so I'll simply say that the Seiko movement most comparable to the 2824-2 in terms of quality and reliability is the 6R15, which is found in some very popular models.
How much were they (MSRP) prior to the discontinuation? I found a new one here (gray market?):

Hello everyone! Quick question- I am in the market for a new Seiko SARB017 Alpinist and found one on Amazon for $473.88. The used listings I have found on Chrono24 are often more than that. Should I be skeptical of the one on Amazon?
amazon link
I think that the BEST value at the entry level for watches is the Seiko SKX Diver and an aftermarket Super Oyster Bracelet.
It will cost closer to $300 all in, but you're getting a more durable, water resistant, and much cooler watch.
I like the Seiko Alpinist better on leather, but it will cost a little more and you will need to replace the leather straps pretty quickly if you are wearing it everyday.
I have a JLC Grande Date and a Breitling Navitimer on leather. They are some of the best leather straps available, but they still wear out fast. I know you say you want a leather strap, but I'd strongly recommend a steel bracelet like the one I linked if you want something nice that will last.
Thanks for the response! I saw Seiya, that's where I saw how nice the Alpinist looks with the metal band!
I found this one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SARB017-Mechanical-Alpinist-Automatic/dp/B000KG93BQ
It seems to be legitimate, but I am still cautious. I believe I would have some protection from Amazon if it were a counterfeit, but I am also not sure how I would be able to tell if it was a legit watch or not!
You could always go for a Chronograph, although it doesn't have the rotating bezel.

You didn't mention if it had to be a machanical watch? If you're OK with some electronics I'd go for one of Citizens Eco-Drive watches, like the Brycen (https://www.citizenwatch.com/us/en/mens-brycen/CA0648-09L.html?cgid=mens-ecodrive#prefn1=featureFilter&prefv1=Chronograph&start=8) or a divers with rotating bezel like the BN0150-28E (https://www.citizenwatch.com/us/en/mens-promaster-diver/BN0150-28E.html?cgid=mens-ecodrive#prefn1=featureFilter&prefv1=Dive+%2F+Scuba&start=5).

Eco-drive is powered by the sun, so no batterychanges ever.

If you prefer a purely mechanical watch I suggest the Alpinist. It doesn't have the rotating bezel like a diver (although I has a compass) you get an incredible amount of watch for your money: https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Japanese-Automatic-Stainless-Leather/dp/B000KG93BQ

Seiko has a similar technology to Eco-Drive called solar.
its about $400 on Amazon

Hey guys,

So i'm really wanting to treat myself because I just graduated from an unpaid internship to a job and I realized the best way to do that is to buy myself a watch :)

So i'm really interested in the Tissot more than the Alpinist, but I used to be infactuated with the Alpinist a few months ago. However I just discovered this one and I absolutely love the Seastar. I can't tell if im just hyped about it, but really what was going with the Seiko was the fact that it's discontinued and it's a good "investment", or at least will keep some type of value. The Tissot is a swiss brand that has lots of class, and seikos seem to be a little too popular, but obviously for good reason.
Any thoughts on this hard decision??

Tissot : https://www.amazon.com/Tissot-Seastar-Automatic-Chronometer-T120-407-11-041-00/dp/B07D2B9DRV/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1538185145&sr=8-2&keywords=tissot+seastar

Seiko : https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Japanese-Automatic-Stainless-Leather/dp/B000KG93BQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1538185257&sr=8-1&keywords=Sarb017
(really don't like the seikos band, makes it a lot more casual than id like it to be)

I'm a big fan of the Seiko Alpinist. It's beautiful and has a little more depth than a lot of the more typical styles out there.
Nomination for The Alpinist for the $201-$500 bracket. Very unique look, and overall has great function.
Maybe something with a compass? Seiko Alpinist?
This is the watch. I think it's really great. It has 200m water resistance, sapphire crystal, it's an automatic with handwinding, screw down crown, and an inner compass bezel. It also has a sunburst dial, so it changes color slightly when you move it around in the light.
Well, in case you're concerned with looks as well as durability. These aren't G-Shock tough but solid pieces that should last a long time.... One of Hamilton's Khaki field watches or the Seiko SARB017 Alpinist might appeal to you.
If you like the general look of the field watches, there are other brands that offer more in the durability department in your price range. There are also other 'Alpinist' style watches but there's more variation.
Have you considered Amazon? The price is comparable.
