Silicon bibs! They are so easy to rinse off and catch the food bits that fall out.
I can definitely see how that would be really hurtful and I think "presentable" is a perfectly reasonable standard for us all when it comes to cleaning with little ones (and even that seems out,of reach sometimes and I am a SAHM). That said, if she is otherwise pretty great she probably just didnt realize how she sounded when she said that.
Btw, they make these silicone bibs with a little catch-all that are way easier than cloth bibs to deal with.

I had to delete the registry for my daughter to make one for the new one, sorry. But don't rely on your kid fitting the listed sizes. My daughter was a monster and is always measuring a size ahead. I stocked up on newborn and 0-3 and got some 3-6, but since then I've just been buying as I need them. Some other kids are tiny, too, so it's really hard to call for seasonal clothes more than 3-6 months ahead.
Also (and I'm only mentioning because it's a slight safety hazard) they suggest not putting accessories that aren't sold with the car seat on one. So the foxes are really cute, but you might not want to go for them. Same with the infant insert, if it's not made by the manufacturer.
The baby nail scissors are fucking amazing. I can't use anything else. She's so wiggly.
I used these guys to try out newborn diapers and it worked great. Not the cheapest on a per diaper basis, but it'll probably see you through the newborn diaper phase.
The cloth diapers for burp clothes are amazing. Get, like, 3000 of them. I'm barely joking.

We usually bring him to the sink and wash his hands/arms. And then use a couple wipes for his face/head. As she gets older and you try more things there are more food options that are less messy: small cubes of chicken, shredded cheese, cheese chunks, cooked sweet potato sticks/chunks, pieces of fruit are all things that come to mind as less messy.
