For metal minis there are typically two generally types of solutions.
For instance, I'm magnetizing my Star Wars Legion models this way.
I'm using this 13x13 container with has 4" tall "levels":

I'm using this 12x12 sheet:

The sheet drops right in, I've secured it with some double-sided tape or you can use glue or whatever. Then I put 6x2mm magnets on the bottom of each figure. You'd want to check the Infinity bases to make sure how thick a magnet will fit the recess but basically that's the process. Metal minis are heavier so you might want a slightly bigger magnet or perhaps two smaller ones. There are probably recommendations online somewhere.
It's fairly cheap, very expandable, and should be able to hold nearly any game.
I agree- ornament storage boxes work great. We've used them for years and they take up far less space than our older storage method. We have ones that are similar to this.

We can see what's in it and have used them for many years without anything getting broken while in storage (we did have an ornament get broken last year after leaving storage but that wasn't the box's fault, haha).
For Cthulhu Wars, I bought this xmas ornament organizer for $36:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FXLTSI6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It holds the base game minis, plus 3 expansion factions, plus 2 packs of Great Old Ones. And it has a handle. The maps, player boards, gates, and game tokens are stored in the original base game box.
I'm using Snapware Snap 'N Stack. Each one can house up to 48 figures and the top stack is capable of holding the larger/taller Disney Infinity figures.
i never take everything with me now. Only the one faction that I need for a game. I grew tired of carrying everything as it so bulky.
for storage at home, I put all the ships on display on a bookshelf. Looks good and each faction has its own shelf.
For travel I use an [Ornament Box] (https://www.amazon.com/Snapware-Seasonal-Ornament-Storage-Container/dp/B00FXLTSI6/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&qid=1481564950&sr=8-20&keywords=ornament+tray) that is 3 levels. then I custom made my trays with foam core. everything is snug and does not move. Took a few hours of time while watching tv to make it but its perfect.
