I don't think it's on the Wiki, but if you search the sub for "registry tips" or "product reviews" you'll probably get a LOT of hits. Every few days there's a FTM doing her registry lost on what to choose, and what's even necessary, those usually get really good extensive feedback as far as general items you'll need (weighing the benefits of infant carseats vs. 4 in 1s, what kind of sleeping systems work in what situations, etc.)

On the other end of the spectrum, not quite as often but probably once a week or so, a mom will post from "the other side" with her product recommendations and general tips and tricks from the first few weeks/months of motherhood. That's where you'll find things like "We absolutely love the Boppy lounger, it's great for x,y, and z. We barely ever use the Moby wrap carrier, it's way too complicated to tie and baby gets hot way too fast!" type of reviews. Some of them are really awesome and even link to specific product pages on Amazon.

As far as my own recommendations (I'm a FTM still waiting for baby to decide to make his debut, but I've had lots of time to look this stuff over and make choices) I went with the Graco 4Ever 4-in-1 car seat. A travel system/infant seat seems awesome and handy, but then I realized he'll outgrow it in like six months to maybe a year and then we'll have to spend another several hundred dollars on the convertible car seat anyways. Your preferences may vary, but I didn't feel like it was worth $300 for six months of travel.

Can't speak to the crib, ours was a hand-me-down, though it converts to a toddler bed and I think that's what I would recommend for anyone else, rather get it now and use it for several years than have to upgrade sooner.

Bassinet-wise we got a Graco Pack'n'Play, the Napper/Changer model. It has a playyard at the bottom, a bassinet level where he'll be sleeping in our bedroom for the first few months, and then a handy "newborn napper" station that flips over into a changing table. The napper is not for unattended sleeping, I think it's more of a "I need to put the baby down somewhere for a few minutes" kind of thing.

As far as other stuff goes, think about how baby will eat, are you going to try breastfeeding or are you going straight to formula, or will you do a combination? If you're breastfeeding will you need to pump and store milk? You'll also need an array of mom-care products if you are breastfeeding.

Baby needs to poop. Cloth or disposable diapers and wipes? What kind of creams? I'm a fan of the BabyBum brush. I thought it was silly at first, but it's actually a neat idea, it spreads the cream evenly without getting everywhere, and it doesn't get stuck on your fingers and under your nails for the next five years. Where will you change baby? My bassinet has the changing station, but I'll also get a pad for the dresser in his nursery. Do you want a full on changing table piece of furniture, or just repurpose another space? Where will you store dirty diapers? Straight out to the trash can/laundry or do you want a special diaper pail in the room?

How will you bathe baby? Some of us plan to use our sinks, salad bowls, laundry baskets, whatever. Some prefer to have a dedicated baby tub. Somewhere in between is the Puj tub that fits in your sink and hangs up flat to dry. I was really hyped about getting that at first, but as time has gone by and I've looked at how much we're spending on other things that seem more important it just doesn't make sense to me to spend $50 on a sink liner that he won't fit into in a few months.

How will you carry baby around? Are you looking for an infant carrier or are you interested in baby wearing? If you're going with wearing, do you want a structured carrier or a fabric wrap? There are pros and cons to each kind, some people get multiple varieties for different occasions. I'm getting an Infantino Mei Tai because to me it seems like it has pros from both types.

How will you watch baby? Do you want a monitor? Do you want audio only or do you want video function too? If you want video do you want to be able to check in from work, or just have it function inside your house? Do you want to be able to pan the camera from the monitor (or your phone!) or is stationary fine? Do you want night vision? Do you want to be able to talk to the baby through the monitor? There are all kinds of features and all kinds of price points. I'm personally going with the Snug because it has all of the features I want AND it's reasonably priced.

Where are you going to sit when baby wakes up at night/needs to be fed/soothed/read to/whatever? If you're doing the baby corner you may not need anything new, your existing furniture may be all you need. If you're doing a dedicated nursery you will want a rocker/glider/recliner in there. Again, varying levels of those exist. I went kind of big on mine and got a glider/recliner that is full fabric and cushion because I know I'm going to be spending a lot of time in it, and because hopefully it will last a long time so I will use it in my library (lol I'm never going to get to have a library but I can dream) once the baby gets older.

The last thing I can think of is entertainment... Books, toys and teethers of course, but do you want a bouncer/swing/playmat/toy haven? We got an exersaucer from a friend, I'm going to see how he likes that before I go big on anything else.

Good luck, hope this helps you get started!

We got this one that is just the camera (you use your phone as a monitor), which is currently $70 - I got it for $50 on cyber monday, so if you watch it it might go down again. We like it pretty well so far, no problems.
