I did a couple different ways for ebonizing, and I highly recommend india ink https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003IGK1OI/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

over anything else. It's definitely the easiest and most reliable, and it doesn't matter what wood (or tannin content) you have.

I also recommend the oil based (not water) polyurethane. The water based can have cloudy white areas, and the oil based turns a much nicer gold color over time.

Good luck! Would love to see the end result.

I bought this and barely used any

You'd be fine with the small container but I'm glad I went with this. It's a better deal and I'll be finishing a few more guitars for friends with it in the future.

Same goes for Tru oil. I got the 32oz but you only need the smallest one for one guitar.

E: also I don't mind at all. I'm glad to help. Once you get the body you should make a post here and let us know what kind of finish you are trying for. Pictures and examples will help.

The community is super helpful here. Someone will be able to help you even more than I could. I'm still pretty new to this myself :)

One more vote for india ink. I've used it on red oak before and it turns completely jet black with the texture of the grain still visible but without any color variation.

If you want solid black no stain even comes close to india ink. It is also cheap and doesn't smell toxic. This is the one I used: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003IGK1OI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I would get some india ink and try it out on a few scrap pieces of different woods. I suspect you'll find that you don't need to use a wood as expensive as walnut to get the result you are looking for - any inexpensive hardwood like oak should work just fine.
