Ok. I'm going to give you a number of options here. Mostly they're white (because white goes with everything dahlink) but one is pink. They're all inexpensive. I'm giving you Amazon links and prices here, but you could use Goulet or maybe even get a better price on ebay. Here you go:

The Cross Beverly, about $36. Some people don't like Cross fountain pens, I love mine. This will be an attractive and reliable pen that she can be proud to use anywhere. It should come with Cross ink cartridges, which are very nice.

The Parker Vector, about $20. It's a bit plain looking, but they're superb pens, very reliable and write very well. It should have Parker ink cartridges.

The Jinhao 159, about $10. Very inexpensive, but Jinhao makes a surprisingly nice pen. It probably has a converter or can use standard cartridges. (It doesn't come with ink.)

The Jinhao 950 in white porcelain with blue chinese decoration, for less than $5.50. This is a very attractive pen (much nicer than the price implies) and the porcelain feels luxurious. (I have one with different decorations.) Also, the nib can be interchanged with the Goulet pen nibs. (Again, doesn't come with ink, probably has a converter in it.)

The Parker Urban, in pink, about $40. (It's not available in white, but that's a rather smashing pink, don't you agree?) This is a very stylish pen. She will be proud to pull it out and use it anywhere. I have one in black. Again, Parker makes fabulous pens. It probably comes with ink.

Or if you want to go very cheap on the pen and maybe get some nice ink with your budget, there's the Jinhao 599 under $5, although I will tell you you should be able to get this for under $2 on ebay.

Ink for her new pen

As I said above, the Parker pens come with ink, and they use a proprietary size cartridge. You can get a Parker converter or you can get craft syringes to refill a cartridge from bottled ink after she uses it up.

If you're getting her a beautiful pen, why not get her some lovely ink to go with it?

Wouldn't some lovely deep purple Iroshizuku ink (about $20) make a lovely impression with the white pens? I just got my first bottle of Iroshizuku this week and let me tell you, the bottle is gorgeous. Or maybe if she wants something less girly, a lovely deep turquoise for under $26?

Or if you want something a little less girly for ink, maybe you might want to look at the infamous (but glorious) Noodler's Baystate Blue for less than $13?

Or something slightly more exotic, with their Apache Sunset ink which shades from yellow to vermillion with writing?

If you want to get her some lovely ink in cartridges, because it's an easy way for her to start, you want to look at Goulet pens' web site for that, they have a lovely selection. I'll leave that shopping to you. Remember standard cartridges won't work in the Parker pens.

[edit:] If it were me, I'd get the Parker Urban, the Parker converter, the Iroshizuku purple, and the Noodler's Apache Sunset. That pen just screams style, even if it's stereotypically pink. (And they do make it in other colors, if you want to search Amazon.) She'll think of you every time she touches it.

Perfect! I would say with 99% confidence you have a fountain pen, not a dip pen (people can do anything, so not 100%). :)

Now, the only thing left to do is help figure out what filling mechanism you have, and what ink you want to start with.

For filling, it is most likely a converter of some sort, although with the end ring, it might be a piston fill using that. I doubt it, but that is a good place to start. On the end opposite the cap, does the part below the gold ring turn freely? That type of piston fill won't unscrew, but will turn freely until it gets to the end of the stroke, then it will turn freely the other way. I also have a parker that the end piece turns to release the section from the body. Again, I doubt that is what this one is, just because most chinese pens like this are not that way, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Most likely, what you need to do is take the cap off, grab the gold portion just below the body, and unscrew the body from the section. Once that is done, if you can take pictures of what it looks like, we can help you on how to fill it. Here are a couple of links to some chinese pens so you can see what I am talking about. In both pictures, the top is the pen fully assembled, the middle is without the cap, and the bottom is it unscrewed. There are two types of converter represented here too. Hong Qiang 621 Hero 257A.

Ask if you have any questions, post pics, go slow. I am sure you can get this figured out.

Now onto ink. The cheapest black you can get for these types of pens is probably Hero student ink. I haven't yet tried it, reviews I have seen have it as a very fast drying ink. I have a bottle on order though, just to see what it is like. The price makes it almost like sample pricing to pick up a bottle Hero Black Ink Amazon . Others have recommended Parker Quink Amazon again, an ink I haven't tried, but gets very good reviews. Noodler's has very good blacks too, I love Heart of Darkness, but if you are not on good paper, it may not work well for you, and it only comes in large bottles, so the cost may be more than you want to get into right now (although price per mL is great on it). If you write on cheaper paper alot, Noodler's X-Feather can be a good ink too, and it is designed not to feather on cheaper paper, and the standard Noodler's black is a good ink.

One big thing, only get an ink that is labeled for fountain pens. A lot of the other advice here (speedball, higgins, etc) assumed a dip pen.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Noticed I repeated myself on getting ink, cleaned that up.

Ah, a journal you say? That sounds lovely. A journal is a lovely way to record and store your excess thoughts. You can look back on them and reflect, and compare your current thoughts to how you used to think in the past. It's a good way to keep track of the way your mind can mature over time. If you organize your thought processes, they flow much more easily and much more naturally. It can be a very calming process. Personally, I know it relaxes me.

Have you ever used a fountain pen before? A friend of mine recommended them to me about a year or so ago. I absolutely love writing with mine. It has a certain way of flowing, you know? My thoughts come straight out of my brain through my neck, down to my right shoulder, through my arm, into my right hand, and it feels almost like the electricity courses through my fingers and I like...become the pen, in a way.

You know? It's nice man. 👌

Enjoy man.

Oh yeah, I work at a small Japanese restaurant somewhere in Santa Cruz. Don't look for me too hard, or I'll disappear! 😉👌

I stopped going to community college...finished my Gen Ed..but I love learning. I just read the textbooks, you know? Sometimes I'll just go to school and drop into the classes or ask people questions about the material. People love teaching each other, you know? 👌

Look, you don't need to go down the rabbit hole and as much of a pilot fanboy as I am (Fal-con, Fal-con UUUUUUUBER ALLLLLLLES!!!), the Vanishing Point is just odd and expensive for something that's a gadget sort of pen. If you want to up your writing experience, get some awesome inks. You literally can't do any better than Pilot's Iroshizuku line of inks. They make any pen a-motherfucking-mazing. Live that Take-sumi life. Its quality makes Noodler's Black bend over a barrel and request many foul and degrading things be done to it. And one bottle will last you a looooooong time. Get a good blue like Private Reserve DC Electric Blue or Visconti Blue (Lamy's Blue is quite nice as well).

After you get a good ink, get some Rhodia A4 pads. Lovely things, those Rhodias. But also Mead has some tablets which are high quality but I can't remember the name of at the moment because I'm about half a big bottle of wine into the night.

Stay with less expensive pens and realize you don't need to break the bank on this hobby. Look up some Jinhaos, PenBBS, etc. You can have great writing experiences without keeping up with the Joneses. I don't regret my purchases, per se, but I know they weren't necessary. This sub is great and fun to dork around in, I do enjoy it, but it's bad for the wallet.

Peace, love, and Humptiness forever. Time to go put the laundry from the washer into the dryer.

Oh yeah, always empty your pockets before you go to bed. Don't want them puppies going through the wash, ya herrrrrrrrd me?

)

[Edit: I forgot to mention getting a fun and ridiculous pen because they're cheap and people will sometimes think they're super expensive. Like the Jinhao 950 here. I own one with a different design. It's heavy as heck and nearly everyone thinks it's either cool or funny. Lastly, welcome to the subreddit, you should have a good time.]

You might already be aware, but please note: don't ever put india ink in a fountain pen unless you want a bad time! India ink will almost certainly clog up a pen (with shellac & other stuff), that's why specialized (more viscous) fountain pen inks exist! Anyway...

For brushes:
I went on quest to find the darkest, flattest, quickest to dry, and matte (no shiny shellac in this bottle) ink! What I found was Dr Martins Hi-Carb Black Star India Ink. This ink always dries without a hint of gradation, perfect for inking comics! OOh I love this ink.

For fountain pens:
After years of loving Noodler's Heart of Darkness ink (it's just so black!), I found something better last summer: Sailor Kiwa-Guro. My god, no words, it's hard to describe, and while it does dry a little slow, it DOESN'T BLEED EVER! Google image searches might help.

Anyway, uh, I love water based inks, can you tell ;)? I hope you find some favorites. My tastes are for ultra hi-contrast, but everyone is different. And oil based inks are another matter altogether...

P.S. My favorite travel brush pen is this guy. It's disposable and a little on the dry side, but the ink quality is fantastic. Out of the twelve or so brush pens I've tried, this is the only one I personally enjoy using. I notice jetpens has a 5pen sampler pack, you might wanna try that out.

> Last year my mom passed down a Lamy Safari that was completely destroyed and after trying and failing to get it to work, I resigned myself to my good ol' cheap gel pens. But this post pretty much re-ignited my interest. Right now my Amazon cart has a universal cartridge, a Jinhao x750 in black night sky, zebra g nibs, and Diamine ink. So thanks for that :p

Speaking as someone who's recently done the same thing with calligraphy, I'm happy to help you do so. Except for the hit to your pocketbook, of course. ;-) I've heard decent things about Jinhao. Apparently they are very good for their price, but being a "cheap chinese knockoff", are more susceptible to defective units. Make sure you order from a reputable seller who will allow you to return it if it fails, but hopefully it won't. A nice thing about some Jinhao pens is that the nibs are replaceable with many #6 nibs, so you have some options there.

> I decided to go for the diamine because it was cheap and only 30ml, so if this is something that I actually really like (I print pretty small, my 0.4mm gel pens have become my holy grail, so I can be pretty picky about this stuff) I'll spring for the Iroshizuku and Noodler inks I've fallen in love with.

I've heard excellent things about Diamine ink. I ordered some Diamine Oxblood because I wanted something that looked like dried blood, and Diamine Majestic Blue because OH MY GOD look at those colors. Yes, that's just one ink being used: it goes from blue to red as you apply more ink. That's some magic ink, there. (This is called "sheening".) I'll be ordering some Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses (again with the glorious names!), J. Herbin Emerald of Chivor 1670 Anniversary Ink and Rohrer & Klingner Alt-Goldgrun (Old Golden Green) because they perform similarly. The Noodler's ink is definitely the most cost-effective, but you can order a sample kit of sheening inks from Goulet if you aren't sure which you want.

> I've also been lusting over water brush pens... anything you can tell me about those?

I'm afraid I don't know much about the brush pens as yet. I've used some micron brush pens before, but never one supporting fountain pen inks. That said, I plan to get back into it. There is an artist named Kevin Eslinger that does some utterly amazing work with Dr. Ph. Martin's Bombay India Ink. He basically paints like you would with watercolor paint, and then blows on the fresh ink through a straw, making those cool blown/dripped patterns you see. I bought some of the ink and some traditional brushes, but I'm also looking into some brush fountain pens as well. Noodler's and Platinum both have some that I've been eyeing.

Before starting, you should settle on a nib width that you are going to use. A lot of time people choose Medium because they think it's middle of the road and they often leave unsatisfied because it isn't. The line width you get from normal writing utensils tends to be more of a Fine on a fountain pen. I find it hard to get good handwriting with a medium nib whereas a fine is a lot easier.

Now at £10 here are some options:

  • Pilot Varsity: Ready to use pen made by Pilot. I've never seen anyone complain about the way it writes, and it already comes with in inside it. You also get your choice of nib Cons? It's a disposable pen and isn't that pretty
  • Platinum Preppy: Very similar but actually takes cartridges. You can choose your nib. I think you'll have to buy the cartridges separately.
  • Baoer 801: Fine nibbed Chinese knockoff pen. Mine writes very well. Comes with fine nib. You'll probably want bottled ink. Section scratches easily but at the price I don't mind.
  • Baoer 388: Very popular Chinese Sonnet knockoff. Mine writes very well. You'll probably want to use bottled ink with this one. Medium nib only.

There are plenty of other Chinese pens out there, and you could go search them and find one you like too. I'm partial to Baoer pens: for me they have written better than any other Chinese pen. A lot of people recommend Jinhao pens, but their nibs run wide and they dry out a lot quicker when left sitting.

As for bottled ink, I would suggest it for the Chinese pens because they come with the converter that is used to fill from the bottle. The inks I would recommend for you are:

  • Parker Quink Black - my go-to black when it comes to inking any pen up.
  • Waterman Serenity Blue - good generic blue. maybe a little light.
  • Waterman Mysterious Blue - A darker, off blue
  • Any freaking Waterman ink, I've heard good things from them. Tender purple? go get it. I suggest Waterman inks because they are cheap in the UK and very fountain pen friendly.

I bought this and barely used any

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003IGK1OI/ref=sxts1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482985846&sr=1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65

You'd be fine with the small container but I'm glad I went with this. It's a better deal and I'll be finishing a few more guitars for friends with it in the future.

Same goes for Tru oil. I got the 32oz but you only need the smallest one for one guitar.

E: also I don't mind at all. I'm glad to help. Once you get the body you should make a post here and let us know what kind of finish you are trying for. Pictures and examples will help.

The community is super helpful here. Someone will be able to help you even more than I could. I'm still pretty new to this myself :)

u/Lawlzstomp · 7 pointsr/fountainpens

Not sure if you live in an area with Target but I have had a lot of luck with Greenroom notebooks. I got a bunch on clearance for like $.69 a pop or something ridiculous. Check for paper that is smooth, but not too thin at local stores.

Heavily recommended Black N' Red Notebook on Amazon for about $7 a piece. Again, not sure how much paper you run through, but it's good cost per performance.

If you need a lotttt of paper try HP Laserjet Paper on Amazon. Redditors vouching for it. If you need lines/dots, place a lined sheet of paper behind the blank paper to guide yourself and then three hole punch it.

Graph paper composition notebook from Staples posted recently.

---
Another thing to keep in mind you haven't discussed is what ink you are going to use. Pelikan 4001 comes highly recommended for it's cost while still being a dry ink that works on poor paper.

[[Noodler's X-feather]] can be incredibly useful for writing on cheap paper. It will not spread on cheap paper with a fine/extra-fine nib. I don't know if you are using cartridges or converters yet, but switching to a bottle ink can give you some better performance potentially depending on what ink carts you are currently using.

---

Some other pens that would be good for you at Uni would be the Platinum Preppy a $3.00 pen that starts as cartridge based but can take a converter or be eyedropper converted (where you fill the whole barrel full of ink). They come in EF, F, M and in a variety of colors.

Wingsung 698 in EF is another great bargain option for high ink capacity, uses the same nib as the Pilot MR line (Metropolitan, Retro Pop, etc.), with good build quality for under $20.

---

Another big takeaway for beginner fountain pen users is higher cost doesn't mean better functionality. Benefits level off really fast when spending more money when it comes to functionality.

u/Nibs_dot_Ink · 3 pointsr/fountainpens

Depending on what you consider "budget", I would strongly recommend the Platinum 3776 Century line of pens as your everyday carry.

Leakage: The pens have a "slip & seal" mechanism which prevents the ink from drying out. Obviously, liquids do not behave in the same manner as air, but I'd assume that the double seal (of both a screw cap and the slip & seal) would greatly reduce the chance of leakage. I can attest to the effectiveness of this mechanism. Just yesterday, I uncapped a Platinum 3776 that had been sitting on my desk for over half a year and it wrote perfectly on the first stroke!

Additionally, if you're really concerned, I would also put a tiny amount of silicone grease on the threads of the pen (a mere smidgen is all that's required) to give you more peace of mind.

Appearances: The Platinum 3776 Century Black Diamond is a very classic-looking pen. It's not pretentious at all, the trim is beautiful, and it's got a nice-to-hold body. Paired with a nice, super-black, well-behaved ink like Sailor's Kiwa-Guro ink, I think that's a winning combination.

Let me know if you want to see a demo of the pen and ink combo and when I get home tonight, I'll put it together and take some pictures for you.

u/Pachyphytum_Oviferum · 3 pointsr/tarot

I found it here on US Amazon . I doubt it's available at someplace like Hobby Lobby or Michael's, but you never know.

I'm sure it can be used with a quill, but I suspect the effects won't be nearly as grand. I've tried it with a dip pen and it wasn't great. I've tried it in several fountain pens and the effects vary wildly. I've found it looks best with a smooth, juicier fountain pen.

Many cheap papers will bleed/feather with any kind of fountain pen ink. You'll need something that's a little heavier and, preferably, smoother. The smoother and less absorbent the paper, the more the ink sits on top and creates the awesome effects as it dries. However, it doesn't have to be expensive paper - I've had a lot of luck with slightly-nicer-than-dirt-cheap papers.

/r/fountainpens has taught me everything I know; highly recommended if you're at all interested!

u/occultdeathcult · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

Iroshizuku also have 15mL bottles that come in sets of three colors... for me it was ~$25 USD. My favorite is yama-budo from this set. Maybe these will be more easily available/affordable than shipping samples from the US?

Imo, the best way to improve your handwriting and become more confident with your pen is to use it a lot. And I totally agree with u/chewychubacca that once you get better ink, you'll want to write more. :)

u/LH99 · 3 pointsr/boardgames

I did a couple different ways for ebonizing, and I highly recommend india ink https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003IGK1OI/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

over anything else. It's definitely the easiest and most reliable, and it doesn't matter what wood (or tannin content) you have.

I also recommend the oil based (not water) polyurethane. The water based can have cloudy white areas, and the oil based turns a much nicer gold color over time.

Good luck! Would love to see the end result.

This contest was maid for me. I literally have a writing wishlist. I'm also going to link a few things about writing.

I love to write letters to my daughter and I also write the letters in a journal for her to read when she gets older!. I would love to get this [TWSBI 508 fountain pen]http://amzn.com/B00BT1BLRU) (or this Pilot Metropolatin fountain pen) and fill it with this Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-Peki ink to write with. All of this would be used to write daily and also record those letters in a journal like this rustic leather journal. But those are pipe dreams at the moment until I can earn enough money turking.

A gift card would be nice if I won (my e-mail is mrbrentoz@gmail.com)

Keep on writing!

Write On!

Starter: Lamy Safari with some cartridges.

I have this pen at work and use cartridges rather than a converter to save time and prevent potential catastrophes of filling them. If you like the fountain pen in the GIF, TWSBI Vac 700, should be a great second starter or you can get a converter; just know you'll need bottled ink.

My favorite ink right now is Pilot Iroshizuku, lines are clean for most of my foutain pens, it dries decently fast and is easy to clean out of the pen aswell.

u/JonSzanto · 10 pointsr/fountainpens

I most certainly do, especially if you have any friends who like fps and ink: Pilot Blue/Black in the 'coke bottle'. You can get this for around $22.00 for 350ml (you read that right) and that is for a remarkably good ink that is even fairly waterproof. If you split the bottle with friends, you can end up with the absolute best ink value on the planet. I got into this ink because pen restoration people I know use it, and they use a lot of ink and it can't be a problem ink. Give it a look.

u/wowgreatdog · 2 pointsr/neopets

Ohhh I was using noodlers ink for a bit too! I fell in love with flexible-tipped fountain pens a while back, and I tried a few inks, including noodlers and pelikan- this one in particular! https://www.amazon.com/Pelikan-Bottled-Fountain-Brilliant-329144/dp/B001TBM2XC

I actually found pelikan dried faster in my experience, and I ended up preferring it! Though if noodlers is working well for you, then you don't need to fix something that ain't broke, as they say lol

Oh and copics, huh? I have some myself and my guess was a toss up between copics and watercolors ehehe

I think the inking pushes it into looking more like paints, but I can tell you also have some very nice copic techniques. She looks great!

You should enter this in the BC! I'll take a look for her next week ;)

I copy and paste this comment everytime someone asks this question but I think it's useful. Anyways, I went through a lot of trial and error in the process almost ruining my 1.5mm parallel pen. But I finally learned and I've had great success with J. Herbin ink and Winsor & Newton Calligraphy Ink. What I do is save the old cartridges that come with the parallels, including the little ball that rolls around and I refill them using these syringes. This was done using the J. Herbin ink linked above. Good paper is also key, so they don't bleed.

u/exzeroex · 1 pointr/fountainpens

Diamine, tons of colors and are affordable (especially in Europe) many colors are dupes of more expensive inks out there. They likely make ink for other companies that sell ink but don't have ink manufacturing capabilities, like Akkerman. They have a lot of great colors, but their water resistance is generally low.

Noodler's would be the ton's of colors and affordable US company but he's a 1 man show so people don't have much faith in him combined with his political views he's one of the more controversial company/people in the fountain pen world. He seems to experiment with inks and ink properties so he has some interesting water resistant colors and UV glowing colors out there.

I like water resistant inks so I'm a fan of Pilot Blue and Blue Black, Platinum Blue Black, Platinum Classic Iron Gall series, Platinum Pigment ink series, and Sailor Nano-pigment Seiboku and Souboku.

If you're looking for great bang for buck blue ink, I would buy a 350ml Pilot Blue Black bottle for 20 something dollars. But you'll need another bottle to put that into, so either an empty bottle or another bottle of a nicely shaped Pilot Blue Black.

u/PriceZombie · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

Click to expand my chart. You'll see there are 3 types of sellers:

  1. Amazon (new)

  2. 3rd party

  3. and 3rd party used.

If Amazon (new) is available, I use that as my posted price. My chart will include all 3. The reason for using Amazon (new) over 3rd party is that the API doesn't factor in shipping, so the 3rd party sellers price is misleading more often than not.

If you click over to the all items page, you'll see the $22 price from Amazon, as well as the other 3rd party sellers.

PS: For amazon prices, I do a real time lookup, so my published numbers are always correct at the moment my post is made.
u/idkbanana · 3 pointsr/Watches

Ohh I'll have to check that out.

And I see you like Faber Castell, haha. But you should definitely keep checking massdrop every now and then. They get some good deals for fountain pens (everything else too)

But seriously, you're not kidding. After getting into fountain pens and writing with them, I take my time to write legibly. I love it!

And really good ink isn't bad at all! Check out Pilot Iroshizuku

u/invisiblebob8616 · 3 pointsr/fountainpens

I don't know of any starter packs on Amazon, although you can get them from Goulet, so you'd probably have to do it piece by piece. Amazon also doesn't tend to have the best prices on fountian pens and accessories and isn't known for packaging inks super securely, so that's worth considering as well. From Amazon I would recommend a Pilot Metropolitan (too many Safaris on amazon are fake), a bottle of either Pelikan 4001 or Pilot Iroshizuku ink, and a Rhodia pad

u/Fairlanefan · 11 pointsr/fountainpens

Oh man, buying someone who is into fountain pens a fountain pen without knowing anything about what the person likes is a Herculean task.

You may be better off buying some fountain pen ink and notebooks. Maybe look for some special edition inks like Montblanc The Beatles Psychadelic Purple and a couple nicer notebooks.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077VRM5NZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_2F4iDb8B3S0V2

Or a nice case - I have never had too many cases.

If you’re bent on getting him a pen, search eBay for a restored Sheaffer snorkel. You can probably get something for about $100 with a gold nib and, if the boss doesn’t have any they will think it is cool - and if they do have one, they’re probably already addicted.

I got a beautiful black Sheaffer Saratoga for $80 with a matching pencil. Not a white dot, but in beautiful condition.

Pilot makes an ink under the Iroshizuku brand that has a fantastic magenta called Yama-Budo. It and other Iroshizuku inks are available at Amazon for very good prices. If I were to start over I would only buy Iroshizuku inks, they are that good and very well respected by the fountain pen community.

I mentioned this last time, too, but just in case folks didn't see:

Kiwa-Guro is identical in every way to Platinum Carbon Black. They're both super dark, pigmented, no shading at all, completely waterproof blacks--honestly, it's impossible to tell them apart on the page, and there were no significant differences in terms of flow, dry-time, or feathering.

Platinum is a bit cheaper per ml (60ml instead of the Sailor's 50ml): Amazon has the Platinum for $22 while Kiwa-Guro is $19. It's a difference of only $0.02/ml, but if that's your thing, it's good to know. Personally, I prefer filling in the Platinum bottle (Sailor's insert is just a hair too short for larger nibbed pens)--but you can't go wrong with either. They're both superb inks.

u/asciiaardvark · 2 pointsr/Pen_Swap

this might be why you haven't gotten any takers... the super-waterproofness has been tempting me to get a bottle for a while but looks like it's usually available under $20

Seems like there's a sweet spot for sales; there's not much room to discount at the low-end & not many buyers at the high end. Maybe try at your local pen club or Pelikan Hub, so you can save on shipping? (or if you know someone who works somewhere with negotiated shipping rates...)

u/JunkyardSam · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

Haha, pretty much. Heavy glass soda style bottles. 11.83 ounces so nearly the same as a can of soda. Inked up forever for $22!

They're not fancy inks but I keep over 20 pens inked so I use primarily safe and simple inks these days... and I just love the flow and feel of Pilot's inks.

u/tombolger · 5 pointsr/fountainpens

You're buying waterman ink and a $15 pen in this equation which is absurd. Cheap pens need to compared to cheap pens.

Let's say you buy a $2 Jinhao from eBay, free shipping, in an EF nib, including a converter, and then buy this $22 350 mL blue ink from Amazon.

It's 7 times the ink for twice the price, which is 3.5 times the value on ink. Plus, in an EF, you're writing a line more comparable to the .05 line of normal cheap pens, while putting far less ink down on the paper, which could mean that you use half or even less of the ink than you described. That 350 mL bottle would last forever. And the total cost for basically a lifetime of writing is $24.

The lie we tell ourselves is that we can save money by buying the pens and inks we WANT to use. We don't, it's a fantastic waste. But at its core there is truth to the economic upside of a refillable pen.

u/KillahJoulezWatt · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

I love the feel of the Sheaffer black cartridges, but it practically dissolves in water. I just bought a bottle of the Pelikan Brilliant Black ink to refill the converter on one of my pens and it's beautiful and while not archival quality, will not disappear in a spill. It's thicker than other inks I've used, so little to no feathering unless you're using some super-fibrous cheap notebook paper.

What I discovered last night is that the heavier weighted and variably textured paper of sketchbooks holds up very well with inks that tend to run or feather.

One final thought, and this might be blasphemy to a lot of folks, is that you can attempt to modify the nib to restrict ink flow if it's consistently too wet.

u/jce_superbeast · 4 pointsr/minimalism

Waterman Intense Black seems to be the best fit for your requirements. It's a nice black ink, and dries quickly.

Parker Quink is an option like you mentioned But I've used Quink in a fine nib and it wasn't grey but it was a light black. In a medium or bigger nib it should be a medium black.

I hope this helps.

u/valdearg · 1 pointr/fountainpens

That does look like a really nice pen. My current (or soon to be secondary pen) is the Waterman Hémisphère in black which was pretty nice, but wanted to go "up" in terms of quality.

I'm new to the separate inks side of fountain pens, so at the moment I've just got a bog standard Waterman black ink from Amazon: http://amzn.to/2hfeIQu. I thought I'd go with a cheap set to get the feel of using the inks, and will run from there into some nicer ones.

A Jinhao X750 is an excellent pen for very little money, add a bottle of Lamy Black and your on budget. The X750 is an excellent looking, well made pen that easily keeps up with far more expensive pens. Lamy ink bottles come with blotting paper, have a depression in the center to make filling easier, and are nearly impossible to tip over.

It's made by Noodler's Ink. I love their inks, and use them almost exclusively. Apache Sunset and other colors are available at Goulet Pens, and Amazon sells it, too. Goulet's customer service is outstanding, and they also also sell samples!

u/TheOrganHarvester · 1 pointr/Pen_Swap

You can definitely manage to get Iroshizuku bottles for lower than that in the UK though. For example, how about these. These are from Japan, so have a longer shipping time, but have no import fees as the are under the threshold, and have Amazon customer service regardless. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but I think you may be somewhat overpriced, with shipping costs taken into account, some of them price pretty closely with the main UK storefronts (Thewritingdesk.co.uk has them for £27.50).

If you do lower the price, I am interested in a few of the iroshizuku bottles. If not, I wish you the best in selling them.

u/knockup · 1 pointr/fountainpens

Well in that case once again in case you don't know: noodler's x-feather is probably the most perfect ink for school and will work on nearly any paper, especially with an F or EF nib like you are using

u/bentonite · 6 pointsr/fountainpens

Pilot Blue-Black is cheap as dirt (350 mL for $25), waterproof, professional, and really well behaved. It also shades surprisingly well on Rhodia and Tomoe River paper (maybe a 6.5/10 on shading which is a bit unusual for such a standard color).

(I've recently rediscovered this ink after spilling some water on a page I'd written and seeing just a hint of desaturation instead of the complete washing away of everything. Instant convert/made me love the ink again).

u/ProfessorVirani · 2 pointsr/education

Are you using the speedball nibs in dip pens, or in fountain pens (in which there is an internal ink supply and the pen does not need to be repeatedly dipped into the ink)? If the former, then India ink should work fine. If the latter, you would need to use an ink that specifically says it's for fountain pens.

If you end up needing fountain pen ink for the whole class, I think Pilot's 350mL bottles are the best bulk value around. https://www.amazon.com/Ink-350ml-INK350BB-japan-import/dp/B001P35A74

u/CyaInTheSkies · 1 pointr/fountainpens

What marketed place on the totem pole? Montblanc doesn't even acknowledge the existence of other pen companies, they don't advertise their ink as being superior to others.

On US Amazon Iroshizuku and Montblanc inks are both around $20, and Montblanc bottles have 10 ml more ink.

>Though everything you said holds true for both montblanc’s ink lineup and Pilot’s

Then why does Pilot's ink put Montblanc's to shame if they are so similar? To me it seems like the difference between the two is just in color, not quality.

u/penguinpunisher · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

Sailor Kiwa-Guro, definitely! A waterproof, pigmented ink that works well with pretty much any paper. Dries rather quick, and doesn't feather.

u/ThereKanBOnly1 · 6 pointsr/fountainpens

u/theonlysaviorCOD · 1 pointr/fountainpens

I would recommend a Pilot Custom Heritage 912 with a FA nib. And also a few shading inks like J.Herbin Emerald of Chivor, Noodler's Apache Sunset, and Noodler's Black Swan Australian Rose.

There are also several flex pens that have been restored by u/willvintage on sale over on his website.

u/superoblivionbread · 5 pointsr/fountainpens

Fountain pens deplete liquid ink much quicker than a ballpoint or gel pen or whatever. Just one of the quirks. And you're probably using it more than you thought! 1-ish mL of ink in a few days of moderate writing is not unheard of considering a single day of heavy duty note taking can do it.

The cost of ink can be negligible if you buy a bulk bottle of Pilot ink or similar. A 50mL bottle of ink will probably last 6-12 months.

edit: maybe don't invest in 350cc of ink if don't know if you'll like it or not. J.Herbin and some other inks are pretty expensive but brands like Pilot, Waterman and Pelikan sell regular ink that's a bit cheaper.

No problem. Those come with an ink bladder (for use with an ink bottle) as well as one cartridge (disposable, and you can buy more).

Use both, see what you like. :) If you want really good ink (each bottle will last about 3-4 years) get this: http://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Iroshizuku-Fountain-Moonlight-69205/dp/B003MVIYZM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410929922&sr=8-1&keywords=pilot+iroshizuku

There are tons of colors to choose from. Pick one that's unique, but not overly festive (so a shade of blue or red, gray or black - no bright neon pink) and keep it. I know they don't come cheap, but remember, it's about 3-4 years of ink.

u/treretr · 4 pointsr/BuyItForLife

To be honest, I would suggest a cheap fountain pen. They dont drip, they are a joy to write with, and the bottle refills are cheap as fuck.

Pilot Metropolitan is $14

A 3oz bottle of Noodlers is $12, and will last for around 10,000 pages of writing. (I really like 54th Massachusetts, but get bulletproof black if you are looking for that shade)

u/dajohnnyboy · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

Could get a Platinum Preppy or Pilot Varsity. I would recommend getting the Pilot MR Metropolitan for under $15. It includes a converter which allows you to refill your pen from a bottle of ink (much cheaper than buying cartridges). If you get the preppy and want to use bottle ink (much cheaper than cartridges), you will need to a converter for $5.

If you want some cheap ink, get [Pilot Blue Black](Ink 350ml INK350BB (japan import) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001P35A74/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_nBJMybE9X0Y0T). It's $22 for 350 mL ($0.06/mL) which should last a very long time. Cartridges are about $0.50/mL.

Not to slight Himiko, but I think the converter is overwhelmingly the way to go over refilling cartridges (something required for some pens but inherently messy, they wear out, and it's not a great experience A for your first fountain pen). I have this one that works perfectly in my Muji. I have heard that most international converters leak in this pen, so I'd be careful to get either this one, or I guess the Schmidt that Himiko mentions above, although I don't have the link for it. I know that everyone has preferences on something so subjective, but I'll also suggest that you buy yourself a bottle of Diamine or Iroshizuku ink first time around, you'll be obsessed in no time. I mean, there's a ton of wonderful ink out there, but both of these brands are so well behaved on all paper, and and have very few duds. Make sure it says 'fountain pen' on the front, as dip-pen ink will ruin your pen. Oh, and welcome to the world of Fountain Pens!

One more vote for india ink. I've used it on red oak before and it turns completely jet black with the texture of the grain still visible but without any color variation.

It's slightly over $20, but it is 350 ml - which is probably a lifetime supply. A coke bottle full of ink

Lamy black is "very fast" at drying and rated "high" for highlighter resistance. Source is jetpens comparison article that /u/blazing_7 mentioned.

I also bought this.

Just this week I got Kon-peki and Shin-kai for $19 each and Momiji for $15 on Amazon.com. All had Prime shipping.

For Yama-budo, anywhere from $20-25 is a typical price on Amazon.com; earlier in the fall it was under $20 for several weeks (CamelCamelCamel). Occasionally it's cheaper from a third-party seller who ships directly from Japan, but the savings are usually on the order of $2-3 with a wait time of two weeks (as opposed to two days).

I have a regular at the coffee shop I work at that's a fountain pen fiend and likes embarrassing the coworker he comes in with by giving a full description of the pen and ink he has that day if there's no one in line behind him. It's usually some TWSBI, don't remember which, but he uses the Iroshizuku Kon-Peki cerulean blue and it's absolutely gorgeous.

I "shamed him" the other day because he brags about his pen then found out how much the Rotring 800 I carry costs, then his embarrassed coworker said he has one too.

best: a tub of thinking putty off amazon. Damn that shit's addicting.
2nd best: my fountain pen. And then a hell of a lot of ink.
runner up: my angel wrap blanket from amazon. So fluffy and versatile

worst: One time they had cookies on sale at my school for 25c a cookie and 50 for a glass of milk and I handed over all the money I had (like 10 bucks) and then got a very very bad tummy ache.
I'd do it again if I had the opportunity honestly

I’m sorry, it was foolish of me to assume that you were in the US too!

Here’s the link (turns out it’s actually 350ml) Ink 350ml INK350BB (japan import) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001P35A74/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_nGPXBbHBKKPT8

And since it is a japan import I’m thinking you should be able to pick up a bottle! However, I have no idea how the Amazon in India works, so maybe not. But worth a shot!
