So I just finished reading Stahl’s Illustrated Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and it is a wonderful book. I will go so far to say if you buy any ADHD book this should be the 2nd ADHD book you buy. The first one should introduce you to the disorder such as Dr. Hallowell’s Driven to Distraction or Dr. Barkley’s Taking Charge of Adult ADHD or Taking Charge of ADHD: The Complete Authoritative Guide for Parents. The third book would be one that is aimed at the day to day treatment for ADHD. That Said Stahl’s Illustrated ADHD is awesome

Many ADHD people are visual learners and this is the book for them. Dr. Stephen M. Stahl, MD, PhD now of Cambridge, previously of Stanford and UCLA (more information about the author here) has made a wonderful illustrated and detail book that is 168 pages, it covers what you need to know and is easy to tread in 2 days. It is sorted in 4 chapters and this is the amount of pages and Visual figures or tables it has. I also provide links to zoomed out pictures of all the pages from the publisher’s website

Warning, it is not directed at the common man with the purpose of everyone being able to read it like some ADHD books. You should have at least a high school biology course and know the basics of neurotransmitters if you are going to read this book without assistance. The book is written as a study aid / refresher for already existing doctors, nurses, psychs, and for people in medical school. That said I believe this is something a college freshman who is taking a biology or medical course can easily pick up and understand without outside assistance. I also believe it will be helpful to show other people who are skeptical about ADHD if you have a person who can explain what they mean by all the pictures. If you feel comfortable with the sample pictures I provide then you will be fine with the book, you do not need to be a super geek or anything to understand this. This book is trying to be causal to read. Too many medical books are purposefully trying to be “dense” and boring to show how smart the author is, or to go so in depth of the disorder that your eyes want to bleed. This book is trying to be fun and light, it is trying to be useful in the day to day understanding of medical officials and actually helpful for them. It is something every medical study craves that their medical book is written like this for it is something they can actually get and understand.

Now Stahl does a lot of medical textbooks for diseases, disorders, and doctors. He has three main series with multiple books in each series. Essential Psychopharmacology, a Prescriber Guide’s Series, and 7 other illustrated topic books. The 8 total illustrated series as follows.

Once my finances open up I am hoping to read the other illustrated
books for half of them apply to me in some way (chronic pain, anxiety/stress, antidepressants.)

I hope you will find this book useful. Here are the current prices from multiple sources. I bought and read the google play edition.

Stahl's illustrated is a great academic source that a lay person, with an above average knowledge of biology, can still read and understand. It gives and overview the neurology and pharmacology of ADHD. If you wanted to read something even more scientific, you'd have to get into psychiatry and neurology textbooks and primary sources like studies. A university librarian would be able to point you in the right direction.
