It's laborious as I'm current in the middle of using a kyroflux to make exact magnetic copies of all my old dos floppies for the exact reasons you mention. But also in the interim I'm using one of these in my vintage PCs since my actual vintage HDs are only 50 and 20MB in size (so picking which games to keep installed is tough)

I used the 2.5" version in my PowerBook 1400 and it worked fine. I haven't tried in an iMac yet, but it should. Important thing is to get the "industrial" CF with true IDE mode. Other cards said they would work, but I could never get them to initialize in Mac OS.
