USB to VGA external display adapters do exist although I can't vouch for how well they work as I've never used one.

(that's two separate links by the way.)

u/construktz · 5 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Nah it doesn't, just the HDMI. Most will not these days until you get to a much more bulky option. You can get a USB to VGA Adapter though.

u/ekoranek12 · 3 pointsr/macsetups

Pretty much this^^ You'll need a thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort to VGA and then a USB to VGA adapter. The USB to VGA adapter will include some sort of external graphics card because USBs aren't really made for video. Something like this will do the trick. You'll also have to run a DisplayLink driver to run the USB to VGA adapter. In my experience with DisplayLink on Mac, it's been useable but no where near perfect. I've tested it on Mavericks and Yosemite. Hopefully this helps you some. Despite all my searching, this has been the "best" solution for multiple external monitors on a pre-retina macbook pro.

I had a laptop. i can only put two moniters per graphigcs card.

however you can buy external graphics cards.

yuck it has lots of ads :(

maybe just amazon search usb graphics cards. opps sorry my link was bad

here is a usb graphics card you just need to buy 4-6 of them :)

>Up to 5 displays can be added (5 USB2VGAE3 adapters needed)

>cons:The software created some problems. As soon as I installed it, shockwave started crashing in google chrome. I have to reboot a few times a day due to this problem. It is starting to get very annoying.

carful though moniters take a lot of data. a usb graphics card may have limitations i do not know about. they probably will not be hugely responsive so not the best for gamming. and they might use all your usb bandwidth.

edit: warning i in no way endors the products, i have not used a USB graphics card. i do not know how well they work. so be careful and read reviews and find one or five that will fit your needs.

That is just ungodly. If you need 5 monitors and you are not working in a NOC, you're doing it wrong.

Anyway, depending on what the guy is using the monitors for, The cheapest way to do this is with a USB to VGA adapter. It's basically a cheap video card SoC that runs through the USB interface. Here's the first one I found on google: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-External-Video-Monitor-Adapter/dp/B005G306I2

I've had pretty good luck with one of these.

Also if you really are interested and only have one video output, you can purchase a usb to vga/hdmi adapter for an additional output.

u/silver-silver · 1 pointr/techsupport

The problem with this setup is that you only have one video card output to run off of and there's really no way to have individual images on the monitors unless you get a seperate USB to VGA adapter and an HDMI to VGA adapter. The HDMI to VGA allows you to connect through the default GPU output while the USB adapter uses the GPU to simulate a separate, independent image. If you just get an HDMI to VGA converter and split the line you will have two mirrored images on the monitors rather than individual images.

yes, USB-to-VGA dongles are available, however I've seen these used and performance suffers; the mouse lags when you use the display attached to the dongle. http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-External-Video-Monitor-Adapter/dp/B005G306I2

You may also want to look into a Matrox Triple Head To Go; the box makes 3 monitors look like one to the OS so you can game with a sort of panoramic view; they're pricy, though.

u/silverhana · 1 pointr/applehelp

oops! sorry i was thinking about the MBPr.
can your workplace upgrade your monitors to ones that have HDMI?
...if not then.. USB to vga? http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-External-Video-Monitor-Adapter/dp/B005G306I2

u/frumperino · 1 pointr/arduino

No, that won't work.

A. Buy this.

B. Buy this.

Connect output from A to input of B.
Output of B is what you want - composite video.

You now have a working solution.

A USB to VGA adapter is called an external video card. They exist, they are silly expensive, and most can't go much past 1080p.

Close, I'm using two Thunderbolt ports, not USB along with a Mini DisplayPort to VGA and a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI along with the built in HDMI port.

If it helps you, here is a USB to HDMI and here is a USB to VGA.

u/wanderingbilby · 1 pointr/techsupport

The least expensive, most convenient option is either a USB video card or a USB port replicator with video. Over USB 3.0 the quality is pretty good and if you're using VGA anyway you won't notice anything. Probably the cheapest unit that will work is this $42 StarTech model.

I'd recommend you spend the little extra to get a port replicator so you get a USB hub and networking in the deal, and if your monitors have DVI, HDMI, or DP get the correct cables - much better quality image.

Look into the External USB Video Cards. Something like this:

u/IUseRhetoric · 1 pointr/linuxquestions

That will only let you control one at a time. With Synergy you move the mouse off one screen and it automagically moves to the next screen, even if it's another computer. From what I understand the newer versions also let you share clipboards.

Edit: This is what a USB->VGA adapter looks like: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-External-Video-Monitor-Adapter/dp/B005G306I2

A lot of the answers here are wrong-ish. Is it possible to attatch an eGPU to a rasperry pi? Yes. Is is probable? No.

A GPU is merely a slab of silicon that is designed to handle complex parelel and visual calculations, and usually has some sort of output to display images on a screen. The most common forms of these are of course your standard iGPU (built into the CPU) and the classic standalone GPU, that communicates with the rest of the computer over the AGP, PCI, or PCIe bus.

Now, there are GPUs that run over other busses. There are USB GPUs, there are Thunderbolt GPUs (still technically PCIe protocal, but whatever), and other forms of GPUs all over the place.

Now, the rasperry Pi already has a GPU. It is a tiny VideoCore IV doohickey, its not very fast, but it does the job. This GPU is part of the SoC, or "System on a Chip." That way, it is quickly able to communicate with CPU registers, memory and cache addresses, and all that jazz without running over any pesky PCI-like bus. BUT, theohretically, it would be possible for you to create an external slab of silicon capable of communicating with the CPU and memory and preforming parellel tasks and providing some sort of digital video output. It would be as simple of modifying the GPIO or USB bus, or even with some knowledge of NiC/SoC relations, the Gigabit ethernet port. Hell, with the correct software knowledge to write ARM based drivers for one of the previously mentioned USB-interfaced GPUs.

But no, it is not probable. Even if you where able to hack together some god awful hardware solution, writing the software for that would be a nightmare, even with a team of hundreds of people and years of time. You would be better of building some cheap x86 solution, in an ITX or PicoITX layout.

But, for gaming, you may be supprised by the Pi's capabilities. I currently have a Model B, with a modest 200MHz overclock, and it does great in emulators ranging from old Sega consoles, to the PSX, and of course the NES, GBA, and SNES. I doubt that a N64 emulator would be out of the question either if that is something that would interest you. The rasperry pi also has its own Quake 3 port, which is a good deal of fun, and runs very well on the small system.

Now, all I want is a PPSSPP port so that I can emulate my PSP games, and I would be set!

StarTech USB2VGAE3 USB VGA
http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-External-Video-Monitor-Adapter/dp/B005G306I2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394390105&sr=8-1&keywords=StarTech+USB2VGAE3+USB+VGA

I first tried a the j5create JUA210 USB 2.0 VGA Display Adapter, but was having problems with the display getting scrambled after unplugging/replugging in.

I have the same exact problem with this StarTech version. After researching the problem, found out that it is a problem with Mavericks and USB display adapters.

It works fine. If I unplug my Mac I just have to restart. I only use that display for Skype, Messages and Simplenote.

u/Csysadmin · 1 pointr/techsupport

That will give two monitors the same signal. It's a splitter, not quite what OP is after. Something like this will give another video output.
