Great quality lights. They have a clip to hang from the supports on the ceiling. You can unscrew the bottom portion for a more direct down-facing beam. It really lights up my clam pop up. It works equally well for in the tent, hanging from a canopy, etc.

I have one of these. I love it.

Yeah, they're not mandatory. But they do have portable battery powered front and aft lights and it's better to have them than not. Red is the light source bugs are least attracted to but they will still go to it, though not nearly as much as other colors. In fact, I've got a floating LED lantern I love that has white and red as well as strobe. The batteries last forever in this thing. I use the red when night fishing to save my vision and the bugs tend to go to my anchor light instead. The green drop lights used to pull in zooplankton/bait fish/game fish will bring the bugs, but it'll be in the water away from you. Any head lamp will bring them right into your eyes. Old timers used to hang lanterns with galvanized pipes off the boat. That brought in the fish and kept the bugs away while still letting them see what they were doing. I guess you could do that on a yak if you used pvc.

After a power outage a few years ago when half the city lost power, I bought one of these lanterns:

http://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-44931-The-Siege-Lantern/dp/B00DII7CTI
(There's two sizes here, normal and tiny - the "D" battery powered one is normal sized)

I have never seen such a positive rating on Amazon before for something with so many votes. It's earned it in so many ways.

Perhaps one or two of these? Runtime and weight is excellent, but you'd probably be much better off with a higher power light and a softbox. Depends on how much room you have I suppose.

I'm going on my first east coast road trip soon and would love a Streamlight 44931 Siege Compact, Rugged 7.25" Hand Lantern 540 Lumen

Streamlight Siege

I've used this many times to light up the table and campsite with my friends. It is waterproof and very durable. I had it hanging in the rain for hours while it was on.
Also it's got three brightness settings and a red light.

Ooh, I think I could use a Stream light Siege. Need an emergency light... https://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-Siege/dp/B00DII7CTI/?tag=parametrek-20

The Streamlight Siege although not a 18650 lantern, is very bright lantern with a High mode of (340 Lumens), Medium (175 Lumens), and Low of (33 Lumens). High mode lasts 30hrs on 3 d batteries which would cover most camping trips. I just picked up one myself and love it, also awesome build quality.
