My whole point is that the water changes make the protein skimmer not necessary, the rocks and sand make the HOB not necessary. I have neither on my 37gal.

Powerheads, you can get 2 sunsuns that are $6 each for that tank (should have linked that, will find)

I have two of these in my tank and they're amazing

There is no need for a sump on a tank < 40 gal.

You're adding things that I'm explicitly saying are not necessary.

You would only need 40 lbs for a <40gal tank.

The whole point of this is setting up an affordable, viable, starting system. Then you can build up over time if you want more stuff. But these are perfectly viable without all the fancy stuff.

More edits - I do not have an RO system. I buy from my LFS.

Something small like this should work.

Although my only concern is that if there is a powerhead in the tank, I don't think a Betta would agree with it. Bettas are usually don't like much if not any current. Although if you do keep up with your maintenance and water changes I'm sure the tank won't even need a powerhead.

Powerhead Questions:

I have a high tech 40G (36in long). I have some hair algae starting to grow and I think that I don't have a consistent mixture of CO2 with the current flow.

What is a good sized powerhead for a tank this size? I've been look at this one: LINK

Its outflow is more of a cone shape than a direct stream. Works well in my slightly bigger 3ft
