I'm actually a FEMA-certified Emergency Manager. I'm qualified to lead mitigation and recovery during a disaster like a flood and up to and including a nuclear attack (but as I hold no position in public safety anymore, I'm only allowed to lead in the event there's no public safety in my area during the event).

A good disaster kit should have:

  • 3,000+ calories per day, per person of non-perishable ready-to-eat food for a minimum of 5 days with a high fat content, but 5,000 calories is better as labor to remove debris is draining

  • 3 liters per person, per day of bottled water for 5 days

  • A First Aid Kit that includes spare medications for anyone who needs them

  • An Emergency Wrench to shut off gas and water. This is VERY important

  • Spare clothes for all types of weather

  • A solar/hand crank radio with EAS (Emergency) frequencies

  • Flashlights, preferably LED ones that all use the same batteries

  • Batteries for the flashlights

  • An A/B/C/D fire extinguisher at the minimum. 2 if in the budget

  • A tent that will fit all occupants of your household

  • Hygiene products for 2 weeks (tampons, soap, toothpaste/brushes, et al).

A six pack of replacement lightbulbs (cfl/led). It's annoying when a bulb burns out at an inappropriate time.

Smoke detectors in all the bedrooms/kitchen. Fire extinguisher in the kitchen and another in the laundry area.

Carbon monoxide detector by the furnace.

Emergency wrench hanging by the gas and water lines.

Minimum of 3 LED flashlights that all use the same batteries and spare batteries.

An USB dial-up modem along with a local dial-up number saved (if you have a laptop and a land line).

A minimum of one liter per person, per day of bottled water stored, long enough to last 5 days. 3,200 calories per person, per day of ready to eat food, also a 5 day supply. Keep these stored in sealed Rubbermaid containers to avoid flood contamination.

A battery powered/hand crank radio with weather/emergency bands and extra batteries.

They said they like beer so I ended up getting them an S-biner that doubles as a beer bottle opener, the SAS Survival Handbook, and the interesting 4-in-1 turn off wrench suggested by you shown here. I'm going to post an update when my match posts their gift to see what they thought.

A few people already mentioned a kit (which should include drinkable water, non-perishable food, basic first aid kit & a tool to shut off your gas like this one) & moonchild02 seemed to cover most steps although the doorway thing is a dated concept and could be dangerous since doors swing during earthquakes. If your house/apartment is newer & up to code (likely) then you'll want to tuck under a sturdy desk/table with your arms covering your head and neck.

Most earthquake injury & death is from stuff falling so if you plan up putting stuff on shelves make sure there's a way to secure items so they wont go all willy nilly but chances are when the big one happens, shits gonna go everywhere anyways so just keep knickknacks to a minimum and make sure you secure big furniture (wardrobes, bookshelves).

If you plan on keeping pets, they will act really strange afterwards (also keep some kibble for them in your emergency kit). They might hide, get super clingy, or run off, try to put a collar on them and if possible get them chipped.

Get a bathmat that is nonslip, if an earthquake happens while you're showering, you don't want to panic, slip and fall.
