The belief at the time was that no one would ever sit through a season of reality TV if they already knew who the winner was. So this was the network's compromise. They put out this greatest hits tape and sold it after Borneo ended. They figured people MIGHT want to relive the greatest moments, but no one would ever sit through the entire season again. This was the only version of Survivor available on VHS or DVD for the longest time. Eventually when they started selling the complete first season (four years later, in 2004), they would include this in the box as an add in. Most people I knew just threw it away since if you had the full season you didn't really need it anymore.
