Let's calculate shall we! We are going to store our video with the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) also known as H.265. And we are going to use a bitrate of 3 mbit.

Here is a HEVC 3 mbit sample, so you know what the quality looks like.

First let's go from bit's to bytes since hard drive storage is expressed in bytes. 3 mbit per second writes 384 kilobytes per second to your hard drive.

Now we want to record for a whole month and after that month we start looping and write over the previous recording. This gives us a month time to check the security footage if something happened and make a copy before the camera overwrites it.

31 days times 24 hours times 3600 seconds time 384 kb = 1,028,505,600 kb or 980 GB.

You can get a 1TB hard drive for about 40 USD, which any business should be able to afford. Here is a H.265 camera that only records when motion is detected for about 60 USD.

But what about older camera's? By far the most used codex for storing video is H.264. On lower bitrates the quality is lower then H.264

If we store at 6 mbit (this is 1080P youtube quality) we need 2 TB, if we store at 12 mbit we need 4 TB.

But what if we have a 100 camera's?

Let's calculate how long it takes for a 100 camera's to fill up a 1 TB hard drive at 3 mbit.

100 x 384 x 3600 x 24 = 3,2 TB per 24 hours.

To store for a week and then loop we need 7 hard drives that are 3 TB in size. The cost for 7 3TB hard drives is about 500 dollars.

Conclusion: in 2019 it's totally feasible, both technologically and economically to store HD footage from many security cameras.
