Sorry, I can't help you with the pet safe thing. I do have a lot of experience fighting ants since I bought my house 3 years ago and have been reasonably successful.

First summer we owned the house, ants invaded it. Mostly through the addition that now serves as a first floor laundry room.

I used the indoor terro ant liquids and they worked great. But I do believe the website says they weren't pet safe. It wasn't a concern for me.

Once you do win the indoor battle, take the battle out to the yard and don't let the ants invade again.

I keep several of these in my back yard all spring, summer and fall. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GRTNRJ4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They probably aren't pet safe either, but it's outside and completely encased in a pretty hard plastic. I keep them in places that are out of the way of my mower to make it easier. Right up against the house, garage, shed, fence, etc etc.

I spread a good dusting of this around the perimeter of my house. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001B1KH1Y/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also had carpenter ants in the base of one of my trees that this took care of as well.

I also sprinkle this bait around the house, garage, shed, etc etc. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0030697TQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Those three things outside, have meant I don't have ants inside anymore. I see lots of ant colonies and such as I walk the dog through my neighborhood. Some of them are pretty good size. But they aren't around my place. Or my neighbors for that matter, I think I've probably cleared up their ant problems for them as well.

EDIT

TLDR;
Once you do get rid of the ants inside, fight them in your yard so you don't have to fight them in your house again.

I actually found the powder is far more effective. I sprayed can after can of wasp raid to no evail. I dusted the nest with this stuff on three separate nests and they never returned to the nest. It is great because it sticks right to it.

This particular one is for ants but I believe it's the same chemical.. I think they were out of the wasp stuff at my store so they gave me this instead (but please confirm of have someone correct me on here if I am wrong). I used a water bottle with a squirt top to "poof" it onto the nest at night.

They also seem to make some with the "poofer" already on it or you can buy one. I know pricy so I would just use a makeshift one but if it is a common problem you might want to buy it.

If you sprinkle some ant powder(its mostly borox ) on it and let it sit for a day or two, you might be able to drive off at least most of the ants for few days. I was having ants living in my potting media and that stuff sent them running. https://www.amazon.com/TERRO-600-1-Pound-Killer-Dust/dp/B001B1KH1Y Submerging in water might work too as another commenter mentioned but you'd have to divide first or have very large container to put it in just due to the sheer size of it. I think you should divide and place pieces all over your garden so they'll all bloom together and make a great display once established.

pest control is a good place to start, but I have used this product around my foundation and it keeps the ants away, it also seems to resist the rain and other elements washing it away. I wouldn't put it anywhere children or pets could get to it, and don't inhale it when applying!
