Me personally I always hated the screen protectors on the Otterbox Defender so I always removed the screen protector from the case, then use Goo Gone to remove the adhesive from the case, and put a glass screen protector on my iPhone then slap on the Defender case.

really nice mate, barely notice its on there, installation was super easy. I had to use more than 1 because i didnt read the instructions and got air bubbles. but my 3rd one came out perfect. if you arent a fuck up like me you wont need more than 1.
If you're looking into protection that won't add too much bulk, I went with this case and couldn't be happier. I've always bought Spigen in the past and they offer solid protection (usually go with a non-clear case but how could I not show off the beautiful color of this thing??)
As for screen protector I went with this. Fits perfectly with the case and seems to be good quality. Came with a plastic frame insert to guide installation and everything.

I personally use the iPhone X version, and I absolutely love them.
I'v had iphones since the 4S and never used one but have heard that with screens getting harder they are scratching easier. So I got my first one for my Xr and it is pretty nice.
