Hey OP, I have some suggestions for you (these are on the DS side of things, as I don't have a 3DS yet because I've been mainly PC gaming). I copied this from one of my earlier posts on the same subject.
Other games that have been strongly recommended by others (but I have not played):
LoZ: Phantom Hourglass. Have fun and kic ass! A friend of mine actually went into basic training recently!
This game is super cheap used and I freaking love Zelda. Zelda games always capture my interest for YEARS. I still play my gamecube so I can play Windwaker. Even after completing the games, they're not ruined to play again. Eggplant Wizard <3
