Reddit mentions: The best nintendo ds games

This is a timely thread. I've been thinking about taking my DSL out of its little corner and playing with it again.

I have some recommendations for you, OP. I will second the suggestions of Animal Crossing: Wild World, Harvest Moon: Sunshine Islands, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Professor Layton, and Ghost Trick, but wanted to give special mention to the following:

• Elite Beat Agents - This is a rhythm game where you tap circles and draw lines while following the beat of a song, as secret agents dance in the background and try to save the world. I know it sounds kooky, and it is, but that's half the fun. The Japanese original, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, was such a huge cult hit that they came out with the English version in Elite Beat Agents. There are a bunch of great songs on it, and the covers are actually decent (a couple are better than the original). Each song opens with a story that introduces someone in need of your help -- and somehow it's your dancing/cheering which pushes him/her to succeed. The stories are often hilarious, but there is one that will rip your heart out and make you teary. Absolutely love this game. (Screen protector strongly recommended!)
  
  
• Rhythm Heaven - Another rhythm-based game, but these two are just really fun and I decided to recommend both. Rhythm Heaven is different from Elite Beat Agents in that it's more a collection of mini games you need to beat in order to advance. There are about 5 mini games (I think) in a collection, and once you beat each one individually, you are given a 'recap' round that basically mashes them all together. This game looks deceptively simple but can be so damn difficult at times that achieving success is so satisfying! The beats in this game are very catchy.
  
  
• The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - Lovely RPG. I thought the visuals were beautiful, and it was fun to play. Not much to say except it's a Zelda game, an awesome and fun one at that. The game makes use of the DSL's touchscreen. Controls may be kind of a bit hard to familiarize yourself with if you're used to normal console controls for Zelda, but after a while you get the hang of it and it's really fun to slash your sword around.
  
  
• Advance Wars: Dual Strike - Tactical turn-based strategy game where you try to battle it out with enemies and crush them all. I didn't think I'd like it, but I'm SO glad I gave it a try. I remember staying up late into the night playing this. It's really addicting. There's a sequel, Days of Ruin, but I've never played that so can't give a personal opinion on it. It comes highly recommended, though.
  
  
• Rune Factory 3: A Fantasy Harvest Moon - Take the original Harvest Moon games that were about farming and raising animals and getting to know people in your town, and add in some RPG-ish dungeon crawling (where you can also tame monsters to help out on your farm), and you have Rune Factory. I will always have a soft spot for Harvest Moon games; this just adds another element to it.
  
  
• New Super Mario Brothers - The DS iteration of Mario. Not sure what to really say except it's a fun platformer, and it reminds me of Super Mario 3 when I played.
  
  
• Mario Kart DS - This is fun, and there's just something addictive about it that kept me coming back for yet another round. I liked this version, though some people do say the controls are a bit off, but I never experienced that.

Hah, I just made a post that was vaguely similar... I'd actually say check it out and see if there are any you haven't played but that sound interesting to you. I'd be really happy to elaborate on the appeal of any of the games on that list that I enjoyed.

The first one I'd say you should give a try is Bow Street Runner, though, which is a surprisingly good flash detective game with a nice historical element to it. The puzzles aren't that difficult but are enjoyable enough, the acting is actually reasonably good, you get to be a detective in Georgian England, and it's just fun.

I'd also say Ghost Trick should be something that you would definitely enjoy. It's basically your brief - a high focus on story and character development, solving puzzles & intrigue, and a bit of a pressure element (difficulty). You can't go wrong here. I loved the shit out of it, and I think you will too. Since you mentioned having a DS, try this!

Also, if you have an Android phone, Layton Brothers: Mystery Room is definitely a must try. It's a series of Locked Room Murders that you have to solve, and it resembles the AA games much more than it does the Layton games in terms of how it goes. The characters are all pretty fun as well, and I really enjoyed this and would strongly recommend it as well.

Edit: I also totally forgot to mention - 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. It's a puzzle/visual novel kind of thing, and I found it very engaging. The plot is definitely sort of a brain twister kind of thing in the 'what even is going on' sense, but everything is explained in a pretty satisfactory way at the end. Definitely consider this one. It's basically Room Escape: The Game, but it does that very well.

If you're limiting this to cartridge titles you're gonna' get fewer results, but I can recommend some:

Steel Diver, a decent submarine combat game from Nintendo.

Scribblenauts Unlimited - A good entry in a solid game series.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, a good strategy-RPG.

Also, regular DS games (which play on the 3DS). Unlike 3DS games, DS games are not region-sensitive, so you can play imports just fine on your US system, too:

Elite Beat Agents - Probably the best music-rhythm game on the DS.

Rhythm Heaven - Another very good music-rhythm game, albeit more in the abstract.

Sonic Colors and Sonic Rush - Surprisingly good Sonic games.

Mama's Combo Pack - I've never played Camping Mama, but Cooking Mama is a great series of food-themed touchscreen minigames.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies - A great space shooter

WarioWare DIY - A fun entry in Nintendo's "microgame" series, with a "custom build it yourself" twist.

N+ - A simple, but extremely fun and challenging, ninja platformer game.

Pac Pix - A fun arcadey game where you draw Pac-Man to eat ghosts.

Jam Sessions and its sequel - Not a game as much as a tool to create music. Still, very good.

Bust-A-Move DS - A surprisingly good version of this classic puzzle game series with touchscreen support.

Polarium DS - A good, if simple, puzzle game.

Touchmaster, More Touchmaster, Touchmaster Connect and Touchmaster 3 - Good minigame collections.

Pipe Mania - A decent take on the old "Pipe Dream" puzzle game.

It's supercute. It's a sequel to Okami (if you haven't played that, you need to. it's been released on a bunch of different systems, but originally for ps2).

In Okamiden, basically you are a wolfpup son of a goddess, and you travel around the land and learn special powers with the help of friends. Your powers are the ability to paint/draw (with your tail!) on the world to different effects--if you draw a line across enemies, you slash them, if you draw a circle around dead trees, you bring them back to life...stuff like that. And your friends have different abilities and help you solve puzzles to complete dungeons and defeat enemies.

It's a really charming game. Even though it is for DS, I will forever recommend it, because the gameplay utilizes the touchscreen SO WELL, and it is just adorable, really fun, and so so sweet. I totally cried at the end. <3

There are some tie-ins to the original game that you may miss if you haven't played it, but nothing that will prevent you from enjoying Okamiden on its own.

It is probably one of my favorite games on the DS family of systems. Top 5 for sure. It's very good.

Edit: It also has a silly sense of humor and doesn't take itself too seriously, which I appreciate. There are lots of lighthearted moments and dumb groaner jokes peppered throughout. It's really great. I replay it every few years because it is just that good. If you can find it for a good price, it is totally worth it. Assassin's Creed is a great game series, but it's pretty violent - you play an assassin, after all. If you want to give it a shot, start with AC2 - it's a much better game than AC1.

Given that you liked Phoenix Wright (oh I do love Feenie.. there need to be more games in that series like yesterday), you could give Ghost Trick a shot. It's got a very similar sort of "feel" to it, though it's a bit more puzzle-y and less investigate-y, if that makes sense. It's by the same folks who did PW, for what that's worth, and I highly enjoyed it. I found the puzzle concepts really neat, too.

And given that you like mystery novels, I recommend 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. Lots of drama, puzzles, decisions, and many different endings. Also lots of reading - it feels more like a book than PW did, to me. I haven't finished this one myself, but it sounds like it might be something you would enjoy. I liked it well enough, it was just more serious that what I was looking for at the time, and I haven't gone back to it yet.

Note, I'm assuming you have a DS of some fashion, since you said you'd played PW; both Ghost Trick and 999 are DS games.

  Almost anything on the DS is a decent start if you have one. Professor Layton is an amazing series with some great puzzles to keep her thinking. There's no combat and no hard new control schemes to learn. Phoenix Wright is another fantastic series but there is some violence in the sense of "murder-mystery/crime" stuff to set up the cases you take and the puzzles you solve. Again, no combat here, it's exclusively puzzle solving.
  
  As old as it is, Myst is another great game to show her (I think anyway) that encourages puzzle solving and reading. You can also get it for pretty cheap. Personally, I prefer realMyst because you get to roam freely but the Masterpiece Edition is truer to the original and doesn't force you to use first-person controls.
  
  If you have a game that uses the Source engine you might want to get Dear Esther for her to look at. It's not so much a game as it is an interactive story told using a first person perspective. There's no combat or anything you simply walk around and explore an island. There's a bit of a ghost story aspect to it but it's not scary at all. It's closer to mysterious. Since TF2 is free you should be able to get Dear Esther to work without buying HL2 or anything like that.
  
  While I really enjoy Portal and love Portal 2 I don't think they're necessarily good games for people new to gaming. The first-person perspective can be a HUGE barrier to entry especially for people that think of things like Mario when they think of games. Plus, if you're looking for a 'wonderful story' Portal's story doesn't really fit the bill (IMO). It's wonderful in the sense that it has wit and charm and some depth if you want to really over-interpret it but in the end it's a short game about escaping from a test facility.

• Have fun bulletin boards. I'm talking things like secret boards and poetry boards. Upperclassmen are pretty much beyond hall rules, except maybe a bulletin board of rules for the first couple of weeks as a gentle reminder.
  
  
• Try to gentle encourage your residents to interact with each other. We have a beginning of the year wing meeting that's mandatory. At that event, have each resident fill out an index card (great time to collect any health information you might need, like allergies), and include some events they'd like to take part in. That way, you'll host at least one event they're interested in!
  
  
• Recognize birthdays! No matter how old we get, we like when people wish us a happy birthday. Maybe with a door dec and a little goody bag. :)
  
  
• Remember that your room is your office, too. Have your door open as often as possible, and keep it clean in there. Be available - older students will come to you if they need you, but only if you're accessible.
  
  
• Recognize the fact that shit happens. Not everything is going to go smoothly - a lot of upperclassmen like to test their boundaries with the RA. Don't be a dick, but don't be afraid to stand your ground. All in all, you're still "in charge."
  
  DON'T!
  
  
• Force your residents to interact with each other. I make a facebook page for my wing, and post things about wing events, etc. on there. Wing Meetings are mandetory, but things like decorating the wing Christmas tree, playing Apples to Apples or spa night aren't forced.
  
  
• Overwhelm them (or yourself) with activities. There's no need to have a game night every week.
  
  
• Be the room check Nazi. People are going to break rules, that's a fact. If they're smart enough to do it without getting caught, power to them. Don't be that RA that likes to check for violations randomly through-out the week.
  
  
• Demand that your residents be friends with you. Some of my best friends have been residents of mine, but you aren't guaranteed to get along with everyone. Don't force yourself upon them at every meal.

  EDIT - Oh yeah. I seriously do wish you'd been my RA. My sophomore year RA was no fun at all. Ever been yelled at for laughing too loud five minutes past curfew? I have. :(

FF tactics is a great one, though it's far inferior to the PSX version.

I can also whole-heartedly recommend Golden Sun, though it's not as deep of an RPG, it's extremely fun. Etrian Odyssey is as hardcore as they come, so it may or may not be your cup of tea. You actually explore and draw your own dungeon maps in it, and the class combinations are nuts.

If you aren't a big fan of JRPGs, you probably won't like The World Ends With You but you'd be doing yourself a great disservice if you skipped it.

There's also Chrono Trigger, which, if you never played it, deserves a chance to be seen. It is definitely an old school JRPG though.

FF3 and FF4 are both great if you like that kind of thing, but if you're not into JRPGs, again, you probably won't enjoy them.

I really loved the most recent Dragon Quest, even though it is decidedly old school and very much a JRPG in the traditional format. But it does a lot of things well, and the class system is deep and rewarding.

Bioware made a Sonic RPG, though I haven't played it so I can't recommend it.

The Castlevania games are all awesome, but they're RPGs like Diablo is an RPG.

OH GAMES! I can't decide just one so these two are pretty grool:

• 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors For DS. It looks so cool. It is the precursor game to the other one, but I read it wasn't 100% necessary to play beforehand. Still looks awesome though!
  
• Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward For 3DS! This game got great reviews and just seems so fucking cool. I have been on the hunt for more games like this, but sadly, a lot of them are only sold in/for Japan.
  
  My favorite game is Touch Detective. I love all of them. I cant wait for the next one! Whenever it actually gets released here that is :( New or used is fine with me! Thanks so much for this contest :) It's an awesome idea!

A lot of these ios FF ports are the newer Nintendo DS version. Those versions were all remade in 3D and look a lot more modern compared to the originals... It is still hard to justify the high prices of Square Enix, but SE is overpriced on all of their top franchise games.

Even on ios the prices are still high compared to other apps, but if you are a FF fan these are all great ports. Also this 50% sale is the best I typically see SE do on their ios apps.... so if you are tempted do it now or they go back up to 16 bucks again.

Animal Crossing: Wild World: It's an amazing game and was one of my first games on a Nintendo DS. There's so much to do in the game and I would really recommend it. Also, the more recent Animal Crossing (New Leaf) is a huge improvement from Wild World. I would deeply recommend that aswell, but it's for 3DS.

Harvest Moon: Sunshine Islands: Harvest Moon is a game that's similar to Animal Crossing but it's mostly about looking after your farm, growing crops, raising animals, etc. It's extremely fun and a huge time sink.

Pokemon Black 2: It's a Pokemon game, you can't really go wrong. It's like every other Pokemon game - Fun as heck! You can also buy Pokemon White 2 which is just about the same with little differences like the UI. A list of differences can be found HERE.

My list may not really be descriptive as they're my personal opinion on the games, but if you want to know more about the games, ask me :)

August huh. I never used to think about it much. As a kid I was always preoccupied because it was the summer holidays and I would be too busy playing and doing to notice the date and month.

It was usually the month we'd go on holiday to Cyprus, as my mum likes it hot. Therefore there are memories of befriending people. Of having a traditional Cypriot dinner round a receptionists house because we became good friends with her and her sister. Being given oodles of cake and playing with the mini Doberman and the chinchilla.

It's also the month where I lost my appendix abroad one year and got to visit Egypt briefly the next. Cairo museum is amazing, I can't quite believe I got to see tutankhamun's death mask in person and stand on one of the great pyramids.

It is also the month where I got to visit Knossos and explore an otherwise closed archeological dig on Crete.

Now we don't have such exciting holidays, but it's the month I get to visit my boyfriend. We're both perpetual students and live together during term, but can't afford to during the summer so off to our respective home we go. Luckily his birthday is early August which is the best excuse for me to visit and it breaks up the holidays nicely. =D

I love this! I might actually steal this idea when I start packing up.

I have several interests but I'll have to say that I've kind of had a kick recently learning about mysterious disappearances. For example, Ambrose Small Canadian Millionaire entered his office and mysteriously vanishes. It was a very popular case at the time and even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle expressed interest in the case but decided not to peruse it.

Another one that I find really interesting is the mysterious case of Nicholas Barclay who, at the age of 13, never makes it home from the basketball court. What makes this whole thing interesting is that Frederic Bourdin, a French con-artist, successfully impersonated the lost boy in spite of looking nothing like him (he had brown eyes where as Nicholas had blue) and speaking in a heavy French accent. There is a fantastic documentary about the whole ordeal called 'The Impersonator' on netflix. Frederic admitted to authorities of not being Nicholas after five months and told authorities that Nicholas' mother had confessed to him that she knew that he was not Nicholas because she had helped dispose of his body. Definitely suspicious but Frederic is a con-man so it's hard to know if what he said was true. We'll probably never know what became of Nicholas.

I think this represents me the best because I love challenges, mysteries, and weird kidnapping cases.

EDIT: I am OK with used for all of these, except for the PC game (because Steam doesn't let you buy used).

PS3: ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. I want to play this game because I've been very interested in the "games as art" argument for a while and this is supposedly the best example of such.

PC: BioShock. My best friend Mikey says this is his favorite game ever. Considering he's never played it, I'm not sure what he's talking about. However, the story looks wonderful and I really dig FPSes on PC.

DS/3DS: Professor Layton and the Curious Village. I have heard a ton about this game, all of it good. For some reason it's impossible to find, so I haven't bought it yet.

Card game/Board game: If it counts, this YuGiOh! card. I've been working on a Cyber Dragon deck for forever, and I'm four cards away from finishing it. This is one of those cards, and the price went up a ton since the Cyber Dragon Revolution structure deck came out.

Wild card: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Fire Emblem is one of the best series ever. It's combination of strategy and storytelling makes it a wonderful experience.

My favorite game is Fire Pro Wrestling Returns.

Not sure what style of games you like, but if you're into Pokemon, you may like RPG-style games as well. I suggest you check out:

• Dragon Quest IX - Man what a great game. I probably dropped 120 hours into this one (though it's possible to beat in far less time, there's just a TON of side quests)
  
  
• Radient Historia - Another awesome game with old school appeal and new trick to keep you from getting bored. Considered by many DS RPG fans to be the spiritual successor to Chrono Trigger.
  
  
• Retro Game Challenge - If you are a late 20's - early 30's gamer or you just like old school gaming style, this game will be amazing for you. I loved it!
  
  
• Disgaea DS - I will forewarn you about this game. If you like the collection aspect of Pokemon, you will get LOST in this. I must have over 200 hours in it and I easily could have put another 800 (no joke) getting my characters to level 9999 (yup, it's possible)
  
  Anyhow, those are my faves. There are so many others to list, but those four alone would keep you busy for years

Wait but I thought you were looking for 3DS games....?

There are Professor Layton games for DS as well that are really good, if you have one of those. I also LOVE the Phoenix Wright games. They sound kind of boring but they're so much fun, so challenging and absolutely the best games I've ever played. And they also take forever to play so such a good investment. You can get the first one for $20 on Amazon.. It is actually the best game I've ever played (at least on DS) I think.

When I was younger, I always played the Pokemon games on an emulator, and kind of want to see what its like to play on an actual gameboy. It brings back a lot of great memories, and I want to play through again! Elephant Barber is a great raffle phrase.

The Game

A bit about myself: I live in Colorado and take advantage of the beautiful mountains by hiking, camping, and climbing. I love older video games, as well as newer games. I am trying to learn to code with Python and JavaScript, and already know YAML Format. I haven't been here long at all, so what are your interests?

You can easily play the other Final Fantasy games on your computer as well, though not through Steam. Square Enix just (like, yesterday) rereleased FF7 for the PC. You can buy that here for $10. FF7 is definitely one of the best FF games and probably RPGs ever made so this is a pretty good place for you to start.

The other FF games can be pretty easily played on your computer as well. You will need to download ROMs from a site like this one as well as an emulator. For FF 4, 5, and 6, you will find the ROMs in the SNES section, which can be played with ZSNES. You could also buy a 3D remake of FF4 for your DS. For FF 8 and 9 they are in the Playstation 1 section and can be played with pSX. The PS2 ones you should probably pay for but the older ones I doubt anyone cares too much since they aren't sold anymore. If you are unsure which to start with, start with 6, its the best.

Someone might recommend Breath of Death or Cthulhu Saves the World since they're the only turn based JRPGs on Steam I know of... don't bother. They've very cheap but very mediocre games and pretty much nothing like the FF games.

I really would like this DS game, but its like $13 once you include shipping, so if that's not possible, then this movie would be nice! It was one of my favorites when I was younger :)

I am 100% in love with the whole Zelda series. Those were some of the first games I beat all the way to the end, and the story lines are all wonderful. I'd say my favorites of those have to be Skyward Sword and Ocarina of Time. Such wonderful stories, super fun dungeons, interesting items, just great games all around! :D

As for what I'd want from Amazon, I'm gonna have to go with Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. It's the only Kingdom Hearts game I haven't had the opportunity to play, and I desperately want to. I intend to get 1.5 Remix the day it's available, but watching a cinematic just isn't the same as actually playing the game for myself. <3

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward has one of the best stories of any game i've ever played, and it happens to be on 3DS. It is, however, a sequel to the equally amazing 999 for DS. I would recommend getting 999 and finding out if it grabs you the same way it grabbed me, and then getting VLR if you want to. You can get 999 for 25 dollars on amazon. I tried so hard to ignore Diablo III, but when I saw a playthrough of the monk in the open beta, I blacked out a few minutes into it. When I came to, I found myself on this page. Unfortunately I don't have enough money at the moment to buy it when it comes out, but I'll definitely be looking forward to playing it when I do.

I understand what you mean about Skyrim though, I've sunk about 30 hours into the game and can't bring myself to play the damn thing anymore (though admittedly, that's probably more gameplay than I could get out of a lot of games these days). There's just too much content and not enough substance in some of these open world games, and for some reason all the decent linear RPGs have been floating over to the mobile market like you said. Just look at some of the JRPGs the DS has to offer, like The World Ends With You (more commonly known as: "The Best Thing Square Enix Has Done In Years") and Radiant Historia (both of which could probably be emulated if you so desired). So yeah, buying a PSP or DS might not be a bad deal.

On an unrelated note, can I ask you a quick question? I haven't played any Zelda games since ALTTP and have been looking to get back into the series for a while now, but can't really decide which one I should jump into. So, between Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and Wind Waker, which would you recommend the most?

Love this game to bits but you have to like mystery/visual novel type games. There is a LOT of reading, it's literally dispersed into puzzle and novel portions, but if you want to experience a story that'll blow your goddamn mind I totally recommend it.

Not sure how underrated but Harvest Moon games. Yes, they're very tedious but they are also relaxing and really games that make you feel happy because of its simplicity.

Also, WarioWare games. They are SO much fun.

I would suggest playing them in the order that they were released. Each game has its own story so you wont be completely lost if you jump in out of order, however you may miss out on some context from previous games, but this is not a game breaker. The released order does not follow chronological order, but for the sake of the story I would still play them in released order.

Hmm.. I would say check out This as a starter, since there are a couple of games in the series. But it is cheap enough, I'm assuming your budget is less than 30 dollars since that's the typical 3DS/DS game prices. But I would say check out Phoenix Wright, it's a pretty good puzzle game and it makes you think on your feet on what to say during the trials. I normally don't like thinking on my feet, but it's fun to see the consequences change when you mess up, so yes. it is possible to fail a case and move onto another one.

You can also check out Animal Crossing: New Leaf for a simple game as well. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as well for a puzzle/action game. That's all I can think off on the top of my head for the 3/DS games. Enjoy! :)

Otherwise, you could try your luck in a store. It is likely that stores like Target and Walmart may still have copies of the Nintendo DS versions in stock.

Don't include the ROMs, and you're golden. Really though, since the SNES/NES patents have been dead, there are plenty of decent clones available already...and they're portable. I have the SupaBoy and it's pretty neat and I've heard really good things about the PokeFAMI DX but I believe it can only play Super Famicom games.

[EDIT] Actually it looks like they sell a version of it without an OS? So maybe you can do whatever with it.

I had to sell my 3ds I got as a gift and all of the games to pay for rent a year or two ago. I had a buch of games good games (Tetris ds being my favorite) and I only got $120 for it. I am not as strapped for cash as I was, but I don't have 3ds money. I would like to have one again because I miss being able to play games like I use to.

2D Tetris won't benefit from 3D as anything more than gimmickry anyhow. 3D Tetris I'd actually like to see first; in my experience the primary challenge of 3D Tetris is not the fact that you are looking at a 2D screen but that you have to hold in your memory where the holes are because no matter what angle you are looking at, some stuff is obscured. "Real" 3D won't actually change that, unless you can work something really clever out with transparency, which I would love to see someone try.

What do you mean you missed it? You can buy any DS game and play them on the 3ds. The DS cartridges fit into the 3ds without issue, it's completely backwards compatible with pretty much all DS titles.

1. I got the first model of the DS, and I played the hell out of it. Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Pokemon - many games entertained me for hours. However, I then made the foolish move to buy Guitar Hero On Tour for it. The screen is now more or less unusable, it is so nonsensitive. Since then, I have not had the money or opportunity to replace it, UNTIL NOW.

Please, Pleaaase start with the first game on the DS, then work your way towards completing them in order. It is a very strongly story based driven game. You will miss out on huge chunks of story if you start elsewhere.

Professor Layton. The series is about an archaeologist who solves mysteries and the game is full of puzzles that make use of the touch screen. It's well written and the animation is absolutely charming. You'll be able to play the first four games in the series but you'll need a 3DS for the later games.

I think you would enjoy this DS game. I've heard it's a good RPG.

Also, you can use them by making a US iTunes account. That's how I get English language applications. It can be hard to get iTunes codes though and they don't accept non-US cards.

The medium is generally called Visual Novels. As story-telling vehicles, they run the range of linear stories with pictures and music to the equivalent of those old D&D "gamebooks" with character sheets and combat systems and if you rolled a 4 turn to page 88. (Though if it goes too far in this direction you'll have purists claiming it's a dating/princess/whatever sim instead of a visual novel.)

Content-wise, just like other novels they can be about pretty much anything, including scraping the bottom of the alt.sex.stories barrel.

Totally did not expect to find this particular title (a smash hit rhythm game in Japan), let alone an import at a local suburban bookstore. A nice surprise to find the manual, Club Nintendo, and game cart in such stellar condition.

The game is Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2, the second game of the Ouendan series, with a spinoff called Elite Beat Agents in the States.

QR codes are awesome, I point my camera at them and my browser opens up whatever lengthy URL I need to go to. I don't know why so many people consider them gimmicky or useless, they aren't there to 'replace' existing information like URL's and contact information, but to augment it and make it easier to get into a users phone.

Event Pokémon are limited time Pokémon and back on the DS I had a gameshark to hack in any event Pokémon that I didn’t have. Some of these event Pokémon caused special things to happen in the games like unlocking the ability to catch the Regi trio in HGSS or Spikey Eared Pichu.

This is more about experiencing something again and realizing that in order to do so with what I have I’d have to literally erase the old saves, not about getting a living dex.

Also in terms of “buy a new copy of old games”, digital ones from Nintendo are one thing, but this is just ridiculous
