I believe they all exist in softcover since you'll probably want them all the same! I've never seen The Hobbit in that format in person though. They also have a few of his other books in the same style.

As someone who grew up reading the lord of the rings numerous times and fell in love with the world tolkien so masterfully crafted I almost feel indebted to share that experience with anyone who seeks. Like yourself, I don't have a lot of disposable income but for this I think I can pack my lunches for the week ;)

I would say they are all not good.
I recently bought http://www.amazon.de/The-Lord-Rings-Book-Box/dp/0261102389 and it's technically the best.
It's cheap, has neat design and the best text quality.
If you want a higher quality edition, buy something else, but if you want a nice edition which isn't only for show in your regal, it's the best.
