I could never finish the Lost World -book, it just describes things in too much detail and the first half reads like a bad philosophy teacher. I'm not the most avid book fan though, but it's the only book that has bored me out of my mind. Nothing happens except the narrator describes dinosaurs, Ian Malcolm's breakfast or his haircut, his girlfriend, the school they're teaching in, or the dump he took for 200 pages before they even talk about anything concrete. 200 pages just to let me know how a day at the university went.

Oh god that's boring. Crichton's trying way too hard to sound intelligent and it comes off as more than pretentious. I've never read anything like that, just try and read that without stopping every second row and going, "what the hell am I reading? Why are you explaining a simple thing for multiple pages and describing the brand of paint on that one wall in the university and how many milliseconds it takes to dry?"
