The latest research is suggesting that Lyme can become a chronic infection requiring longterm, multiple antibiotics to treat effectively. The medical system is decades behind in acknowledging the potential for Lyme to be a persistent infection, and has become divided into opposing camps that will never reach a consensus until the evidence is overwhelming. The average doctor is not only clueless about Lyme, but the other diseases ticks carry. Even amongst LLMDs (Lyme-literate), few are using the antibiotics proven to be effective in eliminating the chronic form of the bacteria.

The treatment options are diet and other holistic methods to control the symptoms, herbs (Buhner, Cowden), antibiotics in a whack-a-mole approach, or aggressive treatment with somewhat dangerous antibiotics like dapsone.

To educate your family I'd recommend Ticked Off, Stand4Lyme's educational video, and this interview with one of the first LLMDs. We are 20 years from fully understanding this disease, the situation is similar to AIDS in the 1980s, there's a lot of speculation, and treatment is haphazard due to the lack of research.
