I would really suggest two cars. I have two boys and 1 car between the three of us got old real quick.
I would suggest a Traxxas XL5 or Traxxas VXL. I have one of each and it works well for us.
Try DNA toys. One of our heelers will only play with the DNA toys-we keep extras in a drawer in case his brother tears one up. Our other heeler will chase tennis balls all day long, and she loves to get after my Rustler in the back yard.
There are some many variables there. For a few hundred dollars, which would be very cheap in this hobby, you can get up and running. This thing will be much stronger in most areas than the cheap crap, but still is not indestructible. On the flip side, replacing $5,10,15 parts can spur a potential engineering mind or creative side in your kid. You need to disassemble, fix and reassemble which can be a good lesson on its own. The cheap stuff just breaks and you're SOL. Hobby grade stuff is fixable.
