I've noticed absolutely 0 input lag, and I'm easily annoyed by such things. Of course, I also went out of the way to make sure the USB extension cord AND hub was powered. A regular (cheap) cable/hub might introduce some lag.

Cord in question: http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-U026-016-Certified-Extension/dp/B0002D6QJO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1348602055&sr=8-1&keywords=active+usb+extension+cable

  • Teflon sheets! I found that putting two sheets of teflon between my tripod and equatorial wedge gave me MUCH finer control when adjusting E/W pointing during alignment. You can find the stuff at cooking suppliers and they cost like 3 bucks.

You can also use these same sheets to cut new teflon rings/washers for various EQ mounts. :)

  • Active USB extension cables have proven extremely useful on cold evenings. Set up the telescope outside, bring the laptop inside and have at it. (Also good if you only have a desktop computer)

LOVE these. 3 of them together will get you a solid 40' out the door.

  • I like to use Starry Night to remotely control my telescope from my laptop

Stellarium works well here as well. :)

  • Inexpensive dew shield. Get some 1/8 inch foam from the hardware store and some velcro to make your own dew shield. Inexpensive and you can roll it up like a yoga mat for easy storage.

Here's another one made from Reflectix.

  • Red filters for flashlights. I just took some red plastic bags and put them over the plastic lens in my flashlights, works like a charm and you won't blind anyone.

Absolutely. In fact, there was a link here not long ago about colored transparency film (including red) from Amazon that makes a great solution here.

  • An extra car battery and inverter makes for a usable power supply in the field. You may have to buy a car battery charger, but it's portable power. Inverters are readily available at auto and hardware stores.

I'll hold forth more on this in a bit. :)

  • Twist ties make for excellent cable management

Yes indeed! And some of the cheap tool places like Harbor Freight also have removable zip ties in all sizes and colors, which make another nice solution.

Yes. I've done this. USB is only good to 10 ft. After that, you need a repeater. I used this one and it worked well. There were a number of different lengths available.

You'll also need a microUSB cable, of course...

We have been using this USB Extension Cable with no issue.

EDIT: Link is for 16ft, however I'm using the 33ft option.

A friend mentioned to try and use an active repeater/extender. I still wonder how it would affect latency. I might give it a go but worry I'm just tossing more money into the mix. This is one he mentioned to try.

You can get an active USB extension (2.0 should be fine) for around 15 bucks.

Not sure about HDMI though, passive ones should be similarly cheap.

The only thing is that you have this link box with the HTC Vive:

https://www.vive.com/eu/accessory/link-box/

The 5 m Vive cable plugs directly into it, and on the back side you connect USB/HDMI (to PC) and a wall-plug power supply of 12 V which has a cable length of no more than 1.5 m I'd say (maybe a little less). You would need to either extend this, too, or plug it into a wall socket somewhere on the way.

Let me quickly think.

[...]

I did not test this myself, but you could probably try a longer pair of regular USB and HDMI cables going from your PC to the link box, let's say 2 m, routing out of your study. And then just use the standard Vive cable from the door of your "VR room" to wherever your playspace is. And if there is power outlet somewhere near your door or in the hallway, you should be fine. In case you have USB and HDMI cable at home, you could test before buying additional stuff.

I have to admit, though, that going wireless indeed is a revelation. I myself have a TPCast kit. I am a Pimax Kickstarter backer and a little sad that (at least initially) I would go back to wired.

EDIT: You can also use DisplayPort to MiniDP from your GPU to the link box (MiniDP there), but that has been a little wonky in the past. Not sure whether this is fixed now.

Try out ACTIVE extension USB cables (not USB hub). First result on google: https://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-Hi-Speed-Extension-U026-016/dp/B0002D6QJO

For a usb extension, are you thinking something like this (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002D6QJO/)?
