Pull ups are one of the best upper body exercises you can do. They work the rhomboidius, teres major, serratus groups, rotator cuff, forearms, and hands in addition to the lats. The pecs and abs are used if pull-ups are done from a dead hang.
Pull downs with the bands work the arms and lats. Another option for working your way up to full pull ups, which is quite a bit more expensive than bands, is using something like a [TRX System].(http://www.amazon.com/TRX-Suspension-Training-anchor-separately/dp/B002YIA6SM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1345736437&sr=8-3&keywords=trx).
tl;drDo pull ups if you can.
I received this trx system before I left and it really was great. Super compact and easy to use in a house or even wrapped around a tree. Kind of pricey but my experience with it was great. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002YIA6SM
Good luck with the challenge if you do it :)
TRX is a form of strength/pilates classes that use resistance straps attached to a bar, and you do exercise using this resistance. You can buy the straps for at-home use but I go to group classes for it, which I adore.
This is what they use at my fitness center: (with a big bar that about 12 people attach themselves to) http://www.amazon.ca/TRX-Suspension-Training-6287-Trainer/dp/B002YIA6SM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332340111&sr=8-1,

This is a photo I got off google images, which kind of looks like something we'd do in class: http://suspensiontrainingrocks.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/TRX-training-class-1.jpg
This is the V-shaped bar that we attach the TRX straps to: http://www.trxtraining.com/images/products/340x220_trx-training-zone.jpg
I know a few gyms offer this in my area but it's still not super popular, I get the feeling that it's a fairly new style of fitness.
