Ex Sonic carhop and current rollerblade junkie here; I've only roller skated for a little less than a year total, but ice skating for as long as I have been really helped me pick up rollerblading quickly. I do a bit of cross training with the pair of fitness skates I bought for carhopping when I have time, and it's a great way to exercise and work on stability. I'd even say the cracks and gravel help improve your dynamic balance...for better or worse.

Might seem like sacrilege, but I think I might enjoy hitting the trails on a pair of blades more than ice skating. You can really feel like you're flying when you're a good rollerblader. The physics are a lot different ofc; although I enjoy rollerblading, I prefer the ice's general forgiveness compared to concrete. I can stop much more effectively on ice skates, so that's obviously a huge plus too.

I think that, as long as you're working on hockey-related stuff (explosive starts, sprints, HIIT), any inline skate would work. It does good to improve your balance, and most importantly, fitness. I will warn you, it's going to be difficult to find a skate with a similar feel to ice skates, simply because of how different the physics of roller skating are. You might be able to get a similar fit of an ice skate, but definitely not a similar experience (assuming you aren't going out and buying Marsblades at this very moment). Something will feel different on inlines, I guarantee it. But in my experience, if you're going between ice and roller skating frequently enough, adapting to which skate/surface you're on takes about 5 minutes or so of feeling like stumbling over your toes. After that, it's smooth sailing.

So you'll probably want hockey inlines to start (The Bauer X300R is a good candidate). Those boots will probably fit similar to an ice boot. But since you are planning on working on asphalt, I'd highly advise against buying a pair with a high-quality quarter package to start; falls on asphalt and similar rough surfaces can chew em up. Low-end hockey skates should suffice for that purpose, at least to see if roller skating is something you're willing to do (assuming you're new to roller skating in general). You might need to pick up some replacement wheels down the line when the stock wheels wear down. Buy hard wheels, which range from 82A to 85A in the hardness scale.

You might look to buy a more expensive roller hockey boot with nicer materials when you're more confident in roller skating, with lighter quarters like nylon tech mesh and plastic composites, lighter frames, etc. As mentioned earlier, I would still be concerned falling on those, because wear and tear from falls on asphalt will damage them a lot more than falls on sport court (I imagine they're better indoors than out, in that sense). In that case, you might try Rollerblade's Twister series, which is a full plastic molded boot, typically coming with a 4x80mm setup. The boot is much more durable to falls, much more supportive, and comes with a wheel setup similar to some stock inline hockey skate setups. But, the cuff size on these will reach higher up your ankle, which won't be the case on ice skates. The liner is also thicker for comfort, which can throw you off as well. And of course, the boot may fit a lot differently than your ice skate. You don't have the Vapor/Supreme/Nexus options Bauer has, for example, outside of trying a lot of different brands, but you can probably find something that fits you really well. But I don't want to dissuade you from that route either; I'm currently skating on Maxxum 84's, which come with a similar boot shape and much larger wheels, and I still ice skate fine after a few minutes to adjust.

Tldr: It'll be hard to get an inline skate that feels close to the feeling of an ice skate due to the physics differences of skating on ice vs on asphalt. You can get a similar boot, but probably not a similar experience altogether. Bottom line, buy what fits.

But by all means, physics shouldn't be the factor dissuading you from roller skating altogether. As long as you do find a roller skate that fits well, you should be good to go. I think it mostly comes down to how often you end up ice skating. I ice skate once to twice a week in Bauer Supremes, and rollerskate about four times a week in a completely different boot with a long frame. Outside of a little adjustment period, I can skate on both surfaces with different boots just fine.

Whether you go for a lower end roller hockey skate or an inline skate more geared for the rigors of outdoor use, I don't think you can go wrong. Just know you'll have to maintain your inline skates a bit more than your ice skates through wheel rotations/replacements and cleaning bearings every once and a while.

Addendum: If you aren't deadset on buying from Amazon, I highly recommend buying from Ice/Inline Warehouse. With their iWin program, you have the option to ship back poor fitting skates for free.

Let me know if any of that seems off-base. It's 3 am, I'm bound to mess up somewhere...

Edited for clarity and links.

/r/hockeyplayers is a great resource for questions as well.

As for the stick, yes height matters. I'm 6'4" and have to have a senior stick with a cut plug (Every composite stick is hollow and has a cap on the top where extensions can be inserted (giggity) to increase the length of the stick to cater to height). Get a senior stick, and as for the brand and model, honestly if it's your first time playing I'd go with a basic model. Bauer, Warrior, CCM, Sherwood, Easton, etc... all have their pros and cons, but it's pretty much personal preference. Bauer is probably the most popular.

Each stick has a specific curve in the blade which will effect how you shoot. Again, the blade curve is personal preference. Here is a diagram of what each blade curve will do to your shot

You can get basic gloves and helmets pretty cheap online.

Amazon Helmet

Amazon Gloves

www.hockeymonkey.com is also a good resource for equipment.

Tour makes decent quality skates at a reasonable price. Like I said, online is probably going to be your best option for equipment, and you don't have to have the best gear when you're just learning. I started with cheap used gear when I started playing ice hockey and as I got better I got better equipment to cater to my play style. Have fun and good luck!!

Aside from the obvious (gear), some great gifts/accessories under $50 are....

Antibacterial spray. Spray this stuff on after every use while the gear dries. Helps reduce the stink. Everyone should use this stuff.

For those of us that sweat, these liners are a godsend. I played once without one the other week by mistake and sweat would not stay out of my eyes. These are a must.

Too much volume in the toes of your skates? Bauer clearly realized this as their latest lineup has an anatomical toecap which effectively does exactly what these do.

It’s a personal preference, but I switched to Tacki Mac over a year ago in place of traditional hockey tape. It really does extend the life of your gloves and lasts a lot longer.

Very interesting, and I love it. Obviously would never be a full time thing, but I think it’s very cool for warmups.

I was just talking to some people today about how much better special warmups/practice jerseys have been under Adidas. A lot of unique things being done. 100x better than what we used to see, just compare the Adidas with the old Reebok. To me it’s not even close. These Chinese themed ones are of course pretty wild, but I think that’s a good thing!

u/ernieball · 5 pointsr/BabyBumps

I LOVE this trampoline. I hate that it's in my living room... but I love how great it is for getting out those sudden bursts of energy. My son got it when he was 17 months old and took to it right away. He's 20 months now and gets some serious air. 4am. 9pm. Doesn't matter. When he's too squirmy to listen we tell him "go do some jumpin!" and he runs over to it, hangs on for dear life and jumps until he's out of breath. I suggest wrapping hockey tape around the padded handle bars though. They come foam covered, which is way too inviting for a teething toddler, but ever since I wrapped it we've had no bite issues.

I have one of the knock offs you can get on Amazon since I use a Warrior helm and the Bauers aren’t designed to fit so I didn’t want to shell out as much money.

It’s okay, and with some finagling it was able to fit, but honestly it was so heavy, the plastic on these is thicker than a regular visor, it weighed more than my cage.

Vision wise it was okay and only fogged up when I was on the bench. And this was during humid summer months.

Overall they’re okay, but for me they’re just way too heavy and I’d rather just wear a cage if I’m feeling like I need full face protection.

This is he specific one I got: https://www.amazon.com/GY-Thicken-Polycarbonate-Hockey-Resistance/dp/B01N6F8823/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1540483253&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=hockey+cage+shield+combo&dpPl=1&dpID=41%2Bo1QUNYGL&ref=plSrch

90% sure it’s just the Tron ones rebranded.

u/KnightofCydonia99 · 6 pointsr/MouseReview

I mainly play CSGO and I had the same problem. The Razer grip, Logitech grip, and the grips that came with my Skoll are all mediocre at best for me.

I highly recommend that you find whatever shape you like the best and put Lizard Skins Grip Tape on it. I promise you won't regret it. It is incredibly grippy with no residue or breaking apart. I put it on the sides where my fingers contact as well as the palm area.

You can make it look very aesthetically pleasing by cutting it to follow the curves of the mouse. Like this G305

Amazon Link

It's $10 for like 4ft and it beats any grip on any mouse you've tried by a mile.

u/Stripedanteater · 2 pointsr/hockeyplayers

Not op, but I got the EZ Goal setup from Amazon. Excellent home tool, but be sure to buy the two inch pole. I've dented a place here and there, but they are extremely subtle dents. I'm very pleased with it.

u/Posseon1stAve · 1 pointr/hockeyplayers

This was the exact stick I bought when I first started playing about 6 years ago, except mine was an 85 flex. I loved it, it's name was "Animal Mother". It eventually got worn out enough I replaced it.

First, the Draper blade is now the Henrique with Warrior (also used to be Kopitar). I got a Warrior AX1 on clearance, but it seems like many websites are getting really low on stock of these. I found it to perform very similar to the AK. I prefer the matte finish, but the grip on the AX1 works great. It's not what I would call tacky the way normal "grip" sticks are. I'm pretty sure any of the Warrior Dynasty sticks would be comparable to your AK.

u/BurntPaper · 2 pointsr/hockeyplayers

Seems like you have it mostly covered. I got the Concept 3 (I liked it a lot better than the Hybrid) and it came with a protective bag. But a shirt would work fine as long as it's thick enough and it'll actually stay on.

I bought THESE, and they do seem to help with fogging a bit, though the main advantage is less sweat dripping into my eyes.

Another concern is water, though your Hybrid will be a lot easier to drink with than my Concept. Problem I've seen is people with stubby water bottle tips (Like the standard Gatorade bottles) have a hard time drinking through the slots. Just make sure you have something with a straw (I have the 90 degree bend squeeze bottles) or you're prepared to drench yourself occasionally if you squirt it through the bars and miss. Otherwise you're unclipping your straps every time you want to drink.

Edit: This is what came with my Concept. Might be worth it if you don't want to mess around with a shirt, or risk having your helmet come out.

u/liquinas · 1 pointr/hockeyplayers

I use Zogs because coconut is my favorite thing in the world and it's pretty relaxing to me to tape and wax my sticks after a long day and enjoying the scent while doing it.

It's also pretty decent at its job of preventing snow buildup so your stick doesn't look like an old garage freezer after every shift.

Good luck with the challenge if you do it :)

TRX is a form of strength/pilates classes that use resistance straps attached to a bar, and you do exercise using this resistance. You can buy the straps for at-home use but I go to group classes for it, which I adore.

This is what they use at my fitness center: (with a big bar that about 12 people attach themselves to) http://www.amazon.ca/TRX-Suspension-Training-6287-Trainer/dp/B002YIA6SM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332340111&sr=8-1,

http://www.trxtraining.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&utm_source=pjn&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=affiliates

This is a photo I got off google images, which kind of looks like something we'd do in class: http://suspensiontrainingrocks.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/TRX-training-class-1.jpg

This is the V-shaped bar that we attach the TRX straps to: http://www.trxtraining.com/images/products/340x220_trx-training-zone.jpg

I know a few gyms offer this in my area but it's still not super popular, I get the feeling that it's a fairly new style of fitness.

u/venni27 · 2 pointsr/MouseReview

Well I personally haven't tried the normal version of the EC2-B but I wouldn't count on it as beeing grippy. I would recommend buying some Lizard Skin 0.5mm (Amazon DE) along with it. But the mouse has got a really nice shape apart from Zowies inconistent black coatings. My hand is 18.5x9.5cm and the EC2-B (Divina edition) is currently my main mouse alongside the KPOE. If you're looking for something similar with stock rubber sides then take a look at the Logitech G403.

u/KieranPeterson · 1 pointr/boardgames

Yep, just figured this out myself. I actually found some rubber hockey tape that’s specifically made to be adhesive on one side and grippy on the other. Works amazing for any game tiles/map pieces that don’t have a usable backside. I’ll edit the amazon link in but I’m pretty sure it’s called “Lizard Grip”.

Edit

u/stevegcook · 3 pointsr/hockeyplayers

If the surface is really smooth, a normal stick should be fine. If it's like a tennis court (or rougher, of course), a wood/composite stick will splinter. In that case, it would be best to get something with a full ABS blade, like this.

Real pucks tend to stick to the surface if it's too rough. For stickhandling training, use this. For shooting, use this. For just goofing off with friends, use this.

Hello! I am a girl so I am normally a size 7/8 shoe and I am a size 3 skate. The toe box has a bit of space but I plan on using powerfoot. (https://www.amazon.com/Powerfoot-Hockey-Skate-Performance-Insert/dp/B01A9EMLR6) to cover the bit of extra space. Definitely swing by your shop and get fitted. My toes brush the end lightly and it feels perfect on the ice!

Pretty sure you can find it on amazon US as well.

Welcome back! I recently got a pair of Powerfoot Hockey Skate inserts https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TFY490E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_sNjjybR42A2BK for my new Bauer skates and LOVE them. They fill the negative space above your toes and I noticed a difference the first time I skated with them. Granted, I am not a great skater but it definitely helped with the fit of my skate and stability.

u/2roK · 0 pointsr/FortniteCompetitive

The G305 is 100g, that's pretty heavy for shooters, a lighter mouse helps with better aim. If you don't want to buy a new mouse I recommend replacing the AA battery inside with a AAA battery + Adapter (or even better, a button battery) and if you want to do it properly also 3D print a few parts to save weight. You can get the mouse down to 57g this way easily.

If you have issues with grip put some Lizard Skin Tape on it, the weight is not why your mouse is slipping but the texture.

u/AddictedToSpuds · 3 pointsr/hockeyplayers

Go to lots public skates and and stick and pucks.

For stickhandling at home, I like to use a smart hockey stickhandling ball, has some weight to it and will roll so it simulates a puck decently well. You can also get a green biscuit, and/or use a slick board you can get from home depot as a stickhandling pad with actual pucks, thrify white board I think it's called.

Here's a couple of stickhandling drills videos:

Skate Fenders are really nice to have and not part of the default gear load-out.

An accessory bag (something like this) is really useful for keeping small loose stuff like tape, wax, honing stone, extra laces, etc contained instead of rattling around in your bag.

A Boot Dryer is great for after the game keeping your skates and gloves from getting nasty and helping them last longer.

Air Freshner/odor absorber for the bag. Especially if you dont air your gear out. Even something as small and simple as these can help a lot.

A multi-tool. Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive. Just something to tighten up loose screws with, cut tape or torn bits of gear, and maybe occasionally open a bottle with.

I've been playing in these for a while:

https://smile.amazon.com/Skate-Fender-Pro/dp/B005RSHOPY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500576116&sr=8-1&keywords=skate+fenders

Doesn't really change my skating style, and it's an extra something between the puck and your skate. I've taken two pucks off of them (but to be fair, no serious clap bombs) and it does seem to make a difference. Seemed to spread out the impact and deaden the impact some. Wish the velcro straps were a little neater, they seem kinda cheap.

70 bucks and some ribbing in the locker room or an ER visit and a few weeks off. No brainer for me.

Pull ups are one of the best upper body exercises you can do. They work the rhomboidius, teres major, serratus groups, rotator cuff, forearms, and hands in addition to the lats. The pecs and abs are used if pull-ups are done from a dead hang.

Pull downs with the bands work the arms and lats. Another option for working your way up to full pull ups, which is quite a bit more expensive than bands, is using something like a [TRX System].(http://www.amazon.com/TRX-Suspension-Training-anchor-separately/dp/B002YIA6SM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1345736437&sr=8-3&keywords=trx).

These are a skaters dream for a loose toe box. All my skates have them.

I'm planning on doing a grip tape mod with Lizard Skins because I have sweaty hands and also hate the logo. The logo is a little less than an inch tall so it shouldn't be too hard.

Yeah, I just this week was trying to buy THIS hockey goal backstop, but "Usually ships within 4 to 5 months?" WTH? Is that time frame taking into account the culling the ore from the earth and smelting it into iron first or something? Anyway, I went with THIS one instead even though I just needed the backstop and it's double the price, I guess I'll try and sell the goal for $40 and recover some of the $$$.
