TL;DR: You don't need USB C-to-C for rapid charging

So I stumbled upon this post while looking for chargers and cables for my Nexus 5X. YMMV for the Nexus 6P, but I would expect there's not a lot of difference.

This post seems extremely well-researched, and OP's responses show a high level of confidence. It seemed to be the most comprehensive collection of information regarding USB Type C cables. The conclusion seems, overwhelmingly, to be that unless both ends of the USB cable are Type C, then rapid charging is simply not possible.

However, I stubbornly didn't want to believe that. I looked for a few multi-port USB Type A chargers, using the advice from this post that the ports would need to support 3A/5V (even though the post claims they don't exist). I ended up buying this one. I also searched for some A-to-C cables, and was fairly indiscriminate about the selection other than skimming the reviews to make sure they weren't utter garbage. I ended up buying this 2-pack and this 3-pack.

I've got everything at home now and we're all plugged in. The Nexus 5X says "Charging rapidly"; at present, the battery is at 66%, and the phone estimates it will be fully charged in 31 minutes. [Future me, here: now it's 84%, 15 minutes.] In contrast, I tried using the same cables with laptops and older chargers from previous phones, and in both cases the phone said "Charging slowly".

I also tried charging with a car charger that I bought nearly a year ago; with this charger, the phone also reports "Charging rapidly".

My verdict: You can absolutely achieve rapid charging with an A-to-C cable, provided that the charger supports 3A/5V. The cable itself probably also plays a role, but it seems easy to find ones that work. I can't speak to whether these chargers and cables are to official USB spec, but in practice everything seems to be working just fine.

I have used these and these for a year without any problems.

They seem to lack the "hooks", too, but they stay on just as well as the one that came with the phone. I haven't tried flinging the phone around like a morning star or flail, but it seems like it would take something like that to disconnect the cable from the device "unintentionally".
