That's what I recommend:
Buttons (pick whatever colors you like. I recommend the screw-ins since you don't have to worry about the thickness of your case as much.)

For start/select/home, I used something like this (bought mine at radio shack, though.)

If you want dual modded out of the box...

If you only want PS3/PC out of the box. (My original box used a Cthulu PCB and a 360 pad for the dual mod.)

Something like this for the case (I found my backgammon board for less than 10$ at an outlet store.)

Depending on what you have access to: usb cable/quick disconnects/wire strippers/wire/soldering station(if you don't want to use quick disconnects, everything on this list can be put together solderless, though.)/electric drill/bits.

Total cost: ~120$ for a dual modded box or ~100$ for a PS3/PC hitbox.
If you start with a cardboard box, you'll save ~20 bucks on the case and drill bits, bringing it down to ~80$ for a PS3/PC ready hitbox.
Maybe a chalk board would be better? You can keep up with it through out the season
you could possibly piece something together with three of these and six of these. You would also need a power supply. I think 4 AA batteries would suffice, but I am not sure how long they would last. You could have a master on/off switch for it, as the counter I listed advertise that they retain memory if a power failure occurs.
I'll have to think this one through some more.
