Sounds like you need to use the tamper. Maybe since you found the Vitamix in the trash room you don't have one? You can get one for ~$12 from Amazon or Vitamix.com. Assuming your blender has the container it came with (tall/narrow 64-oz, looks like the one in this subreddit's picture), this is the one you want: http://www.amazon.com/Vitamix-760-Accelerator-Tamper-Tool/dp/B0028Y4CV4
Also, loading order can minimize need for the tamper. Try to add liquids and soft items first and hard/frozen ingredients last.
One other thing you can do to make sure everything is in order is to do a quick test run without the container. Make sure nothing is touching the drive socket(!) and then ramp up the speed and make sure it speeds up properly.
Came here to say that my best friend broke my tamper using my Vitamix they're cheap to replace: https://smile.amazon.com/Vitamix-760-Accelerator-Tamper-Tool/dp/B0028Y4CV4/ref=sr_1_6?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1521827091&sr=1-6&keywords=vitamix+tamper
