you'd need to download a vr video player. several are on the various apps stores. These will automatically split 2d movies into 2 screens for viewing (not with 3d depth though) and will detect proper 3d sbs videos (and display them correctly).

You then need to find a cardboard player. anything from this to this. Just insert the phone and off you go.

GearVR and daydream are just really nice and polished cardboard players.

For me I bought a cheap headset for my phone. I tried to convert videos to sbs (side by side) and playing them on the vlc app but I was too lazy. I use the Iplay sbs app which you just put videos on your phone and it plays them in sbs without you having to convert them. Although I do like vlc a little more since you can get it to play next videos automatically or loop videos.
