Friends don't let friends buy seagate...
Pay a few bucks more and get a Western Digital drive like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Black-Passport-Portable-External-Drive/dp/B01LQQHF2W/ref=dp_ob_title_ce
These probably will go cheaper on or near black friday too, unless something is a killer deal I would not jump on it right now, I got that western digital drive (2015 version) not long ago (a few months back) for $69 from newegg.
Don't mean to bash but WD has a way lower failure rate than Seagate does.
I know it’s nothing special, but this is my macsetup! I work primarily on video editing projects, some Photoshopping, with some Wordpress website building sprinkled in there. But this setup is used mostly for generic browsing, YouTube/Netflix, and Plex server hosting.
So this is my setup that I’ve built over the course of 4 years.

Little sumo man was a gift from a friend. Custom R2-series astromech droid was purchased a trip to Disney Paris. And I name my external hard drives after characters in movies and TV shows that I enjoy.
Let me know if you have any questions!
WD is a reputable brand. This one's pretty cheap and works great. I have one plugged into my Ps4
2TB WD is currently $74.75 on Amazon and $79.99 at Best Buy, B&H,
Newegg and Office Depot.
Seagate has the highest failure rate of all major HDD manufacturers. I would consider a comparable Western Digital instead. Looks like they're out of stock on the 2 TB for a couple more days, but they have other sizes in stock, and it comes in a multitude of colors.
I got this and its been working great. It's a external hd which idk if you can just pop it out of the case and throw it in.

This one?
I have a couple of Western Digital My Passport drives that I use for movies and such. I would recommend buying one exclusively for Time Machine and using that to back up. Then buy one for your other random stuff. Time Machine doesn't like sharing drives, although you can if you partition it. But the drives are so inexpensive that it's easier to just buy one exclusive drive for it. Mine are 2TB and cost around $80-90:

Those are preformatted for macOS. You can buy the regular one too, but at least for Time Machine you would want to reformat it if you did that. If you are sharing between a Mac and PC, you would want the non Mac version:

You will also need USB-C to USB Micro-B adapters for them. I have these and they work great:

Go for 4TB.
Yup! I got that brand for my PS4. It's actually on sale right now at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LQQHF2W/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LQQHF2W/ref=psdcmw_595048_t3_B00D0L5BH8 this is the one I have. You can plug it in and format it from the ps4.
This one is $69 for 2 TB. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LQQHF2W/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1522989539&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=external%2Bhard%2Bdrive&dpPl=1&dpID=41u14pVvuiL&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1
I have no issues loading games from my 3TB external. Plus you can choose to have some games on your internal and the rest on the external

I've been using this: https://www.amazon.com/Black-Passport-Portable-External-WDBYFT0020BBK-WESN/dp/B01LQQHF2W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491895917&sr=8-1&keywords=wd+passport+2tb
Connect it when you want to play a game that's on it, disconnect it formally when you're not going to use it anymore (hold ps button, stop using external, then unplug). I've played Dark Souls 3, Nioh, and several other games on it with no performance issues. Initial loading/booting up the games seem slightly longer but nothing huge. And regarding in game loading times if they are longer it is not noticeable. Multiplayer has also been fine (SFV, DS3, BB, Nioh).

I bought a 2tb Western Digital My Passport from Walmart for $69. I have all my games installed to it other than Horizon (it has something like 1.6 tb of content installed on it) and everything runs fine. https://www.amazon.com/Black-Passport-Portable-External-Drive/dp/B01LQQHF2W
Any USB 3.0 PC compatible external hard drive should work fine. I've seen some labeled for Mac computers and I might stay away from those (though I suspect they're just formatted differently).
I bought a Western Digital My Passport 2TB drive for my Pro a few months ago and it works great. Link for Amazon page so you can see the model is below:

I would say an SSD would be best as they don't have any moving parts and can take a beating.
