External hard drive if he doesn't have one, is a great option. Something like this would be good:

Your money might be better spent just getting a large capacity external HDD. I got a 3TB Western Digital Passport and it is fantastic.
No, reading from a disc sucks. Reading from a hard drive is awesomer.
you can expand that storage 5-fold with a usb3.0 2-4tb ultra drive. Or more space and larger unit that requires an ac adapter for generally less.
I use two of these, one for games and one for media (can't do both on the same drive)

Looking at this.... You'll be immensely happier just buying a 3-4TB external and adopting it to the machine. The 100$ you save by going the 16gig shield route... you can put to buying a drive like this and be much better off. Side note... The shield unit can natively emulate everything up to about the dreamcast era of games. Most dreamcast play okay... some gamecube play as well, but most don't. XBOX and PS2 don't play at all that I have found.
You can do everything up to n64/ps1/saturn(no nintendo ds since you can't emulate touch on the console) era in about 1.82 TB[according to my library] including mame and CHDs. I don't know if the MAME CHD games play well on the shield natively, I haven't tested them.
But I do know that USB based joysticks like the X-arcade sticks work(don't know about the trackball).
Edit: Also, transferring large amounts of files is terrible on the shield. There aren't any real good file explorers for the shield. So it's much easier to just unplug a USB drive and bring it over to the computer and put the files on yourself than wait forever for a network transfer over ES file Explorer.
I actually got it as a Christmas gift, but here's the one I have -

I love that there's no external power cord. I just use the USB port in the back of my Xbox and the HDD just sits back there completely hidden.
I'd recommend Western Digital over Seagate. From what I've heard, Seagate has a much higher failure rate.
I use this. It's a little pricey, but there are versions that are smaller and cheaper. With this, I'll know I'll be good for probably the rest of the generation.
Wow, you are the worst. Sounds like somebody has a case of the Mondays!
Try this bruh:
>You can get a deal on 500GB current model right now with Kinect for $279 and you can get a 3TB external HDD for $120 or less, giving you an Xbox, Kinect, and 3.5TB storage for $400
Not to mention the internal HDD is only 5400RPM and that USB 3.0 external drive is 7200RPM. Games load faster.
Even though you can get a seagate with more TB I went with the 3TB Western Digital one after some research. Also you can get a 1 TB one for 50$ at Walmart if you are on a budget.

I don't have an SSD but i do have a western digital 3TB hard drive attached Link to USB HDD
When you first connect it the Xbox will immediately ask if you want to use this for storage or media. Pick storage and it will format it to what ever partition scheme the xbox uses and you will be all set. Just note that if you want to use this drive in another Device or PC you will have to format it again to what ever that new system supports.
It must be this enclosure too (2nd one to do this). I just used a Western Digital external drive that I borrowed and it worked fine morning. Will try using it a couple more times after the xbox being off for a while

This is the one I have. I know people don't like Seagate but I haven't had any problems with their HDDs.
Western Digital makes a 3TB for roughly the same price:

It doesn't work.

I've got a stack of 3 of them on my desk hooked up to a hub, and a few more in a drawer somewhere.
I looked into the Toshiba stuff, looks decent (lots of it 7200RPM), but what do you think about this drive?

It's the one drive I have found (that's not Seagate) that is bus powered. Seems to have nice reviews too. 3TB should be enough as well.
I really know nothing about hard drives haha, all I'm looking for is portability, capacity, and (preferably) speed.
Thanks for the post, but I don't see this as a deal. Standard pricing.

Any standard external USB drive will do what you need. Some do come with extra software that helps automate backups, but you aren't required to use it and it can almost always be easily removed.
Something like this would work if you'd like something compact and to avoid extra power cables.
This is hardly a brick and still uses only on cable and is 7200RPM
